Senators' Chiasson awarded $1.2M in arbitration
Ottawa Senators forward Alex Chiasson was awarded a one-year contract worth $1.2 million following an arbitration hearing.

Ottawa Senators forward Alex Chiasson was awarded a one-year contract worth $1.2 million following an arbitration hearing.

The hearing was held Thursday in Toronto. The Senators offered $1 million; Chiasson asked for $2.475 million.

"I'm excited with what happened with the team last year and I think I can be a better player next season," Chiasson said in comments tweeted by the Senators on Monday. "There are no more distractions for me and I'm happy that it's over. I'm looking forward to next season."

Chiasson, 24, was acquired by Ottawa from the Dallas Stars on July 1, 2014 as part of the Jason Spezza trade.

"The arbitration process went as we expected; we had the opportunity to make our case, as did Alex's group," general manager Bryan Murray said on Sunday. "In our opinion, both sides made fair, detailed arguments and we are satisfied with the ruling of the arbitrator."

Chiasson scored nine goals in his first 10 NHL games, six in seven games late in the 2012-13 season, then three in his first three the next season. He finished his rookie season with Dallas with 13 goals and 22 assists in 79 games, then had 11 goals and 15 assists in 76 games for Ottawa last season.

He was injured shortly after ending a 16-game goal drought and his ice time dropped considerably after he returned. He was scratched from two of the Senators' six games against the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"We are happy to have Alex under contract and anticipate that he will be a productive player for us this season," Murray said. "Alex will be given the chance to have an important role in the team's success."

The Senators have an arbitration hearing with forward Mike Hoffman scheduled for Thursday.
