Sharks sign defenseman Dillon to five-year contract
The San Jose Sharks signed defenseman Brenden Dillon to a five-year contract Tuesday

Brenden Dillon signed a five-year contract Tuesday to remain with the San Jose Sharks.

The 24-year-old defenseman could have become a restricted free agent Wednesday. Financial terms were not released, but CSNBayArea.com reported Tuesday the contract has an average annual value of $3.27 million.

"Brenden is an important part of this team going forward and we look forward to him playing an integral role on our blue line for years to come," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "He's a great fit for our organization now and for the future and we're excited to watch him blossom here in San Jose."

The Sharks acquired Dillon on Nov. 21 in a trade with the Dallas Stars for defenseman Jason Demers and third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. Dillon had two goals, seven assists and a minus-11 rating in 60 games with San Jose.

Dillon had nine goals, 17 assists and a plus-8 rating in 149 games during parts of four seasons with the Stars.
