Canadian prime minister says Quebec City would be just the spot for NHL expansion team

QUEBEC CITY, Que. - Prime Minister Stephen Harper says there is no better place than Quebec City for an NHL expansion team.

Harper was speaking in the provincial capital Thursday, a day after NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the league will begin a formal expansion process next month.

Shortly after Bettman's comment, a Quebec group said it plans to apply for a franchise with the intent of bringing back the Nordiques to Quebec City. Such a return would give the Montreal Canadiens a provincial rival, and Harper said Quebec needs two teams.

He also took a jab at the Toronto Maple Leafs, joking that the last time he was in the country's biggest city people were telling him it also needed a professional team. Toronto finished next to last in its division this season.
