Jeff Blashill will be named coach of the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, according to MLive.com.
The Red Wings have scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. ET Tuesday at Joe Louis Arena to introduce their coach.
Blashill, 41, coached the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League to the Calder Cup in 2013 and to the playoffs in each of his three seasons. Grand Rapids was eliminated by the Utica Comets in the Western Conference Finals last Tuesday.
General manager Ken Holland met with Blashill last month but did not want to make anything official until the Griffins' playoff run ended, according to MLive.com.
Blashill replaces Mike Babcock, who became coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs on May 20. The Red Wings were defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games in the Eastern Conference First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Blashill was an assistant coach with Detroit before becoming coach of Grand Rapids in 2012. He was 134-71-23 with the Griffins and has coached a number of the players on Detroit's roster. He will become the second-youngest coach in the NHL; Blashill is one year older than John Hynes, 40, who was hired by the New Jersey Devils last Tuesday.
