OTTAWA -- Dave Cameron has agreed to terms on a two-year contract as coach of the Ottawa Senators, general manager Bryan Murray said Thursday.
The contract will be signed once a technical point is resolved.
"It's agreed to and we're waiting on some language," Murray said. "One paragraph to make it firm."
Cameron, 56, took over when Paul MacLean was fired Dec. 8. Cameron was an assistant on MacLean's staff since 2011-12.
The Senators were 32-15-8 under Cameron, including a 23-4-4 finish to overcome a 14-point deficit and earn a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Cameron improved the Senators' possession numbers. Under MacLean, the Senators outshot the opposition five times in 27 games. With Cameron, they outshot opponents in 25 of 55 games.
Backed by the goaltending of Andrew Hammond, who stepped in when Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner sustained injuries, the Senators' rally became one of the big stories in the NHL.
The Senators earned the first wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference and lost to the Montreal Canadiens in six games in their first-round series.
Cameron was under contract with the Senators for the next two years. This contract reflects his status as coach and rewards the success Ottawa had after he took over.
Cameron will have to replace assistant Mark Reeds, who died April 14 following a battle with cancer. The leading candidate, according to the Ottawa Sun, is Andre Tourigny, a former assistant with the Colorado Avalanche.
Tourigny was on Cameron's staff at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship, where Canada won the silver medal.
Ottawa has offered a contract extension to Binghamton Senators coach Luke Richardson, said assistant general manager Randy Lee, who is GM of the American Hockey League affiliate.
