Senators owner Melnyk discharged from hospital after successful liver transplant

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators team owner Eugene Melnyk has been discharged from a Toronto hospital after undergoing a successful liver transplant last month.

"Mr. Melnyk's recovery has been proceeding very well since undergoing his transplant," Dr. Atul Humar, director of the multi-organ transplant program at University Health Network, said in a team statement. "As with all of our transplant patients, Mr. Melnyk has been monitored closely by his transplant team and his general health has improved to the point where he can begin the next phase of his recovery.

"In addition, we are pleased to report that the anonymous donor has also been discharged and is doing extremely well."

Melnyk was discharged earlier this week, the statement said. His post-transplant recovery will require weekly follow-up with his transplant team and he has been transferred to a facility that will be providing him with daily rehabilitation services.

More than 500 people offered to be a donor for the billionaire owner following a public appeal by the team. Melnyk was suffering end-stage liver failure due to an undisclosed disease of the organ.

Doctors performed the transplant on May 19. Liver transplant recipients typically stay in hospital for up to two weeks, then take three to six months to recover fully.
