Getzlaf says Ducks' Game 6 loss 'started with me'

CHICAGO -- Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf was blunt and to the point about what went wrong in a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final at United Center on Wednesday.

"It started with me," Getzlaf said. "I was terrible tonight and that's on me. I've got to be better and calm our group down as we go."

Getzlaf's line was on the ice for three of Chicago's five goals, but two of them were in the final four minutes of the third period. He was talking more about his play earlier in the game, which evened the best-of-7 series 3-3.

One of the best chances in the first period came when Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad picked off a Getzlaf pass in the Ducks zone and drove to the net. Goaltender Frederik Andersen made a fantastic save, but Getzlaf had a couple of uncharacteristic turnovers in the early stages before the Blackhawks took a 3-0 lead midway through the second period.

"I got a little carried away trying to make plays every time I was on the ice instead of just making the right play and I think it carried over to our group somewhat," Getzlaf said. "We got it going in the second half and had some opportunities.

"I can't do a whole lot in [the dressing room]. I've got to be better on the ice. It doesn't matter what I say if I go out and play like that. That's on me to be ready to play and make better plays with the puck."

His coach and teammates were not quite ready to be as critical of Anaheim's leading scorer in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"Well, I mean, I don't think it was one of his better games," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "At the same time, there's more than one guy on our team. I mean, it's great that he wants to shoulder the blame. But I think there's blame, if you want to use that word, to go around. One thing, when he plays bad one night, he usually plays good the next."

Game 7 is at Honda Center on Saturday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC TVA Sports).

Forward Kyle Palmieri said the problems for the Ducks were a group-wide issue.

"We weren't working hard and they were outworking us," he said. "For the most part, it was just that. It was our battle level. Overall, I think some of the mistakes were pretty minor, but in the grand scheme of things we just got outplayed."

The Ducks have two days off before facing a third Game 7 on home ice in the past three postseasons. Anaheim lost to the Detroit Red Wings in 2013 in the first round and to the Los Angeles Kings in the second round last season.

Several Ducks have pointed to that Game 7 loss to the Kings as a big part of their maturation process and motivation to advance further this season.

"We get ready to play," Getzlaf said when asked how this year can be different. "We've just got to continue the preparation the same way we have the whole playoffs this year. Anytime we've had a break we've used it wisely. We've got a couple days now. We'll get a good practice in and get ready for the next one."
