Rangers, Lightning take East Final to Game 7
Rangers, Lightning take Eastern Conference Final to a decisive Game 7.

NEW YORK -- The New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning will decide the Eastern Conference Final in Game 7 Friday night at Madison Square Garden (8 p.m., ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA). The winner will advance to the Stanley Cup Final and face the winner of the Western Conference Final between the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks.

The Rangers and Lightning both will make their second appearance in a Game 7 this postseason. New York eliminated the Washington Capitals in the Second Round with a 2-1 overtime victory at Madison Square Garden on May 13, while the Lightning blanked the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 at Amalie Arena to complete the First Round on April 29.

The Rangers have posted six consecutive Game 7 wins, tied for the longest such streak in NHL history with the Red Wings, who won six consecutive Game 7s between 1949 and 1964, and the Boston Bruins, who captured six straight between 1983 and 1994. The Rangers also have won seven all-time Game 7s on Madison Square Garden ice, a streak dating to 1992.

Henrik Lundqvist's active six-game winning streak in Game 7s is a League record for goaltenders, as is his goals-against average (0.97) and his feat of allowing one or fewer goals in each of those contests. His six career victories are tied with Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy for the most in NHL history among goaltenders.

Six other Rangers have posted six career Game 7 wins: defensemen Dan Girardi (6-1) and Ryan McDonagh (6-0) and forwards Carl Hagelin (6-0), Dominic Moore (6-1), Derek Stepan (6-0) and Martin St. Louis (6-1). Three more New York forwards are undefeated in at least four appearances: Chris Kreider (5-0), Derick Brassard (4-0) and Rick Nash (4-0).

The Lightning's victory over Detroit in the First Round lifted the club's lifetime Game 7 record to 4-1, with their only loss coming in a 1-0 decision at Boston in the 2011 Eastern Conference Final. Tampa Bay defenseman Anton Stralman is undefeated in Game 7s (6-0), as is forward Brian Boyle (5-0) and defenseman Matt Carle (4-0).

Tampa Bay's Ben Bishop stopped all 31 shots he faced in the series-deciding win over Detroit in the First Round, becoming the first goaltender to record a shutout in his first career Game 7 appearance since Montreal’s Carey Price did so in the 2008 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Boston.

Other Game 7 Notes

* The team that scores first is 117-42 all-time (.736), including a 2-1 mark in 2015.

* Forty Game 7s have required overtime (40-of-159, 25.2%). Home and road teams each have 20 wins.
