Kelowna Rockets fined $500 for criticizing referees at memorial Cup

QUEBEC - The Kelowna Rockets have been fined $500 after a member of their organization approached the CHL hockey operations department and made negative comments about officiating.

The CHL announced the fine Saturday, a day after Kelowna lost 4-3 to the host Quebec Remparts in the first game of the Memorial Cup junior hockey championship.

Kelowna had 44 penalty minutes on 10 infractions but did not allow a power-play goal in the game.

The Rockets, who earned their berth in the Memorial Cup by downing the Brandon Wheat Kings in four straight games for the Western Hockey League title, play their second game of the tournament on Monday against the Rimouski Oceanic.

It's the fifth Memorial Cup appearance for Kelowna, which won the junior hockey championship once — when it hosted the tournament 11 years ago.
