Dubnyk, Wild will try to agree on contract to stay
Goaltender Devan Dubnyk wants to remain with the Minnesota Wild, and the feeling is mutual.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Goaltender Devan Dubnyk wants to remain with the Minnesota Wild, and the feeling is mutual.

Dubnyk is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He has said in the past and reiterated Monday he hopes to stay in Minnesota long term.

"There's no reason why I wouldn't want to be here; it's been a lot of fun for me and definitely the most fun I've had in my career," Dubnyk said. "I'm not going to go look elsewhere if there is no need to, and obviously that depends on what comes and how those conversations are going."

Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher said he spoke with Dubnyk on Monday to express an interest in negotiating. Fletcher said he isn't concerned with Dubnyk's dip in production during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, when he went 4-6 with a .908 save percentage and 2.53 goals-against average. Acquired in a trade from the Arizona Coyotes on Jan. 14, Dubynk went 27-9-2 with a 1.78 GAA and .936 save percentage starting 39 of the Wild's final 40 regular-season games. He is a finalist for the Vezina and Masterton trophies.

"I think it's pretty hard to have a .940 or .950 save percentage every year, every playoff series," Fletcher said. "Nobody does that. Certainly think we have to be realistic about that. I think he knows what we have here. We were a good fit for him and I think he was obviously a good fit for us. Usually these things take care of themselves, but ultimately he'll have the final say and we'll do what we can within the parameters of the salary cap to keep him here."

Dubnyk said believes the future is bright in Minnesota and hopes to be a part of it.

"It's just going to get better, that's why it was an exciting group to be a part of," he said. "It's such a good group of veteran guys that are going to continue being here, but also a big group of young players that made a huge step this season and are showing the signs of continuing to make big strides. That's a really good combination to have."

Dubnyk and the Wild hinted that something could get done in advance of July 1, but he said he will let his agent handle the talks.

"That's why you have the people represent you, and that's why Chuck has built a great team here because he knows what he's doing as well," Dubnyk said. "There's no secret that I've enjoyed my time here and want to be here. There's no point in hiding that and I'd be happy to be here going forward. I'm certain we'll do everything we can going forward to make sure that happens."
