Devils GM Shero on Bylsma, Brodeur: report
New Jersey Devils general manager Ray Shero addressed the possibility of hiring Dan Bylsma as coach and adding Martin Brodeur to the front office in a lengthy interview with Northjersey.com published Tuesday.

New Jersey Devils general manager Ray Shero addressed the possibility of hiring Dan Bylsma as coach and adding Martin Brodeur to the front office in a lengthy interview with Northjersey.com published Tuesday.

Shero was the general manager and Bylsma was the coach when the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2009. They were fired by Pittsburgh after last season.

"I'm sure people will ask that based upon our working together in the past and having some success or winning the Cup together," Shero told writer Tom Gulitti. "That's nothing that I have any preconceived notion on at all. I believe Dan is a really good coach. He'll be a head coach again in the National Hockey League, but I've got to do what's best for the Devils and Dan's got to do what's best for him, and if that leads us a certain way, so be it. But, as I speak to you now, there's certainly no preconceived notion on any persons or player or staff member.

"I'm on the job for what? Two, three hours now. We'll have plenty of time for that and, hopefully, make the right decision."

Shero on Monday was named general manager, replacing Lou Lamoriello, who will remain as Devils president. Lamoriello ended the season as co-coach with Adam Oates and Scott Stevens.

"There's a lot of good coaches that are available, and there's two people in Jersey right now in Scott Stevens and Adam Oates," Shero said. "Adam's been a head coach before (with the Washington Capitals), and Scott I've heard real good things about him. So, in terms of the proper fit or the right guy for the New Jersey Devils, time will tell on that from asking some of the questions and seeing things.

"I certainly have some ideas in terms of coaching styles, philosophies, but I need to find out more about the New Jersey Devils because it's an important decision not only just for next year, but moving forward and buying into that. There's some good coaches available, and I look forward to talking to the coaches that are there (in New Jersey) and getting their feedback and their philosophy. I hope to do that a little bit maybe before I leave (for the World Championship) and certainly when I get back and then go from there."

Another question facing Shero is whether he will bring back former Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur to be part of the management team. Lamoriello previously said Brodeur would have a role with the organization eventually.

Brodeur, who retired Jan. 29 after playing seven games with the St. Louis Blues this season, spent the remainder of the season as a senior adviser to Blues GM Doug Armstrong.

"The Marty Brodeur question," Shero said. "That's the first one today. You know what? I've only met Marty once or twice in my life and he is still part of St. Louis, I think, so it's hard to give an answer to that. But, I'm sure at some point I'll talk to Doug Armstrong just to see, but I don't know Marty and I don't know in terms of after having stopped playing and being on the other side, did he enjoy it, not enjoy it, does he want to stay in St. Louis? Who knows? So, it will be interesting to see what happens with that."

Shero said as long as Brodeur is employed by St. Louis, he doesn’t plan to try to convince him to return to New Jersey.

"He had a fantastic career with the Devils and I've seen a number of these guys that when they stop playing it's a little bit different than they thought in a good or bad way," Shero said. "So, it will be interesting to see what he thought and, again, who knows what his future plans will be with St. Louis? To get any further than that is probably inappropriate, so I'll just kind of leave it where it is."
