Blue Jackets will name captain on Wednesday
The Columbus Blue Jackets have decided on a captain and will name him before next season, president of hockey operations John Davidson said late last month.

The Columbus Blue Jackets will name their next captain at a press conference Wednesday.

"We know who it's going to be," Davidson told Columbus Business First in an interview published April 30. "... He's popped, he's a person that's carried himself with outstanding leadership."

The Blue Jackets alerted season-ticket holders in an email and announced it on their website Monday.

The Columbus Dispatch said it is expected only the captain, not any alternate captains, will be revealed.

The leading candidate appears to be forward Nick Foligno, according to "informed speculation" by the Dispatch earlier this month. Foligno, who signed a six-year contract extension in December, led the Blue Jackets in goals (31), points (73) and plus-minus (plus-16) this season. He was named a captain at the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game in Columbus.

The Dispatch listed forwards Boone Jenner and Scott Hartnell, and alternate captains Brandon Dubinsky and Jack Johnson as other primary options.

"Dubinsky, Foligno and Johnson are vocal and emotional leaders and have strong voices within the dressing room" Blue Jackets writer Rob Mixer wrote in late April. "That's not to say those are the only candidates, but when I think of guys who lead the way for this team, those three jump to the front of mind."

The Blue Jackets have not had a captain since forward Rick Nash was traded to the New York Rangers in 2012. Whoever is named by Davidson will be the sixth captain in Columbus' history.
