Islanders remove Nassau Coliseum ice for last time
The New York Islanders removed the ice from the Nassau Coliseum on Tuesday for the final time.

The New York Islanders removed the ice from the Nassau Coliseum on Tuesday for the final time.

Eight days after the Islanders' season ended with a 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference First Round series, Coliseum workers melted the ice and dismantled the boards and glass from the only home the team has known.

"We're disappointed for [the fans]," Islanders captain John Tavares said after losing Game 7 in Washington. "I don't think we talked about it a whole lot, but we know what this season meant at the Coliseum and how they responded for us was absolutely tremendous. We couldn't have asked for anything better."

The Islanders, who have played at the Coliseum since entering the NHL in 1972, are moving to Barclays Center in Brooklyn next season.

The Islanders' final game at the Coliseum was a 3-1 victory against the Capitals on April 25.

The Coliseum will host a handful of events during the next three months before the arena is renovated and the seating capacity reduced.
