Berube's future as Flyers coach remains undecided
The future of coach Craig Berube with the Philadelphia Flyers has yet to be decided, according to general manager Ron Hextall

A decision has not been made on Craig Berube's future as Philadelphia Flyers coach, general manager Ron Hextall said Wednesday.

"He's our head coach and if something changes I'll let you guys know," Hextall said during a press conference in Voorhees, N.J. "At this point in the process ... we're going to evaluate everything, as I said, and at this point the decision hasn't been made."

Hextall said he and Berube spoke Sunday and the coach "was fine with it."

"I'm not going to make a quick decision to appease people, or to follow along like it's supposed to be done," Hextall said in a transcript provided by the Flyers. "I'm going to do everything I can to do the due diligence that's appropriate to make the decision.

"Once I get there, then we'll let people know. I'm not going to make a hasty decision and look back and regret it. I'm going to do everything I can to gather all the information out there and make the right decision. That goes for a lot of decisions we have to make."

Berube, 49, has one year remaining on his contract. The Flyers finished sixth in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference with a 33-31-18 record, failing to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

Hextall was asked when a decision would be made.

"I'd like to make it as soon as possible in fairness to [Craig]," Hextall said "So we'll keep working at it, and as soon as we get there ...

"Everybody operates differently. I'm not a knee-jerk type of a guy. I typically go through a process before making decisions rather than make hasty decisions. I guess for some people it's the way to go. For me it's not."

Berube replaced Peter Laviolette on Oct. 7, 2013, after the Flyers lost their opening three games of the 2013-14 season. The Flyers went 42-27-10 with Berube as coach before losing a seven-game playoff series to the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference First Round.

Berube is 75-58-28 in two seasons.

During Flyers breakup day Monday, Berube said he was "just going about business" of meeting players for exit interviews. Berube said he hadn't discussed his job status with Hextall.

"Well, again, you evaluate everything," Hextall said. "Eighty-two games in six months, it's a long time. It's a lot of stuff for me to sift through. Like I'm not a knee-jerk guy; that's not the way I operate. So when I come to that decision, Craig will be the first to know."
