New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist did not practice Friday in order to be with his wife, who gave birth to the couple's second child.
"My little girl is here!! Everyone is doing great. She did not get the memo of me returning to practice today so we'll try that again," he said via Twitter on Friday evening.
Lundqvist was scheduled to participate in his first practice since being diagnosed with a vascular injury in his neck Feb. 3.
He was injured Jan. 31 against the Carolina Hurricanes when a shot from forward Brad Malone deflected off the stick of Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh and struck Lundqvist in the throat. He remained in the game and then defeated the Florida Panthers two nights later before being diagnosed with the injury. On Tuesday doctors gave him the clearance to begin practicing.
Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said he will not change their practice schedule to accommodate Lundqvist. Lundqvist did not travel with the Rangers for their game Saturday at Carolina. It's likely he'll practice Tuesday and Wednesday.
"We have to look at the big picture," Vigneault told Newsday with regard to his goalie situation.
Cam Talbot will start in goal Saturday; it'll be his 12th start in the past 13 games.
The Rangers announced defenseman Kevin Klein, who has missed the past three games because of a broken left forearm, hopes to resume skating next week. Klein has been able to do lower-body workouts since sustaining his injury.
