A look at all the action from the National Hockey League for Wednesday, March 11, 2015.

WEDNESDAY'S RESULTS

Home Team in Caps

TORONTO 4, Buffalo 3 (SO)

NY Rangers 3, WASHINGTON 1

CALGARY 6, Anaheim 3

RANGERS STAY HOT, CLIMB INTO LEAGUE'S TOP SPOT

J.T. Miller scored the eventual game-winning goal at 16:34 of the first period and Cam Talbot stopped 28 shots, including a goal-line glove save on Nicklas Backstrom, to guide the New York Rangers past the Washington Capitals and to a 12-1-3 record in their past 16 outings, including three straight wins.

* With the victory, the Rangers (42-17-7, 91 points) leapfrogged the idle New York Islanders (43-22-4, 90 points) into first place in the Metropolitan Division and past the idle Montreal Canadiens (42-18-7, 91 points) for the top spot in the Eastern Conference and entire NHL, where the top seven teams remain separated by two points.

* The Rangers have won their past three meetings with the Capitals – including two contests this season, and are 11-4-1 in their past 16 regular-season games dating to Dec. 12, 2010. They will play twice more this season on March 29 at NYR and April 11 at WSH.

* The Rangers are 18-5-1 this season against the Metropolitan Division, including points in 19 of their past 22 games versus divisional opponents (18-3-1).

* Miller scored his second career game-winning goal (also Dec. 13 at the Vancouver Canucks). He is 7-8-15 in 42 games this season, compared to 5-5-10 in his first 56 career games.

* Talbot is 11-1-3 in his past 15 appearances, including points in each of his past five games (4-0-1). He has allowed one goal or fewer through regulation in each of his past five games. The most-recent Rangers goaltender to do that was Henrik Lundqvist from Mar. 16 to 25, 2007 (six straight).

* Carl Hagelin and Martin St. Louis scored for the Rangers. St. Louis stretched his point streak against the Capitals to 10 games (8-8-16); he has 31-51-82 in 76 career games vs. WSH. Kevin Hayes had two assists for his third career multi-point game (1-2-3, Feb. 12 at the Colorado Avalanche 0-2-2, Feb. 26 vs. Arizona Coyotes).

GAUDREAU, STAJAN SPARK (ANOTHER) FLAMES COMEBACK

After falling behind 2-0 less than three minutes after the opening faceoff, the Calgary Flames reeled off five straight goals, highlighted by 2-0-2 from Johnny Gaudreau and Matt Stajan, to end a three-game skid against the Anaheim Ducks and improve to 4-0-1 in their past five games overall.

* At 37-25-5 (79 points), the Flames remain in third place in the Pacific Division, but pulled within one point of the idle Canucks (38-24-4, 80 points) for second place and opened a two-point lead over the idle Los Angeles Kings (32-21-13, 77 points), the first team outside the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Western Conference.

* The Flames overcame a multi-goal deficit to win for the ninth time this season; only ANA and the Detroit Red Wings have done this at least seven times. They also posted their 18th win after allowing the first goal, second in the League behind the Predators (19).

* Gaudreau posted his fourth career multi-goal effort to extend his point streak to five games (3-3-6). He ranks second on the club with 18-32-50 and is the first player to reach 50 points as a rookie with the Flames since Jarome Iginla (21-29-50 in 1996-97). Only Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg (21-32-53) has more points among rookies this season.

* Stajan posted his second two-goal performance of 2014-15 (Jan. 9 vs. the Florida Panthers) and 13th of his career. He has 4-1-5 in his past four games after finding the back of the net three times in his first 40 games.

* Sean Monahan and Jiri Hudler provided the other goals for the Flames, who tallied four times on seven shots over the final two periods. Monahan (4-2-6) and Hudler (5-4-9) each stretched point streaks to five games; they pace the Flames with 25 and 24 goals, respectively. Monahan also leads the Flames with six game-winners.

* Kris Russell had three assists to equal a career established on Dec. 4 vs. COL. He has 2-6-8 in his last four games, including three multi-point efforts. Dennis Wideman had two assists; he has 2-4-6 against the Ducks this season and 0-7-7 in his past four games overall.

* Karri Ramo denied 29 of the final 30 shots he faced to win his third straight decision and is 13-7-1 overall this season.

BOZAK HELPS MAPLE LEAFS CONTINUE HOME TREND AGAINST SABRES

Tyler Bozak forced overtime with 3:25 remaining in regulation before scoring the lone goal in the shootout to rally the Toronto Maple Leafs past the Sabres to end a three-game slide. The Maple Leafs earned their sixth straight home win against the Sabres and are 11-1-0 against Buffalo at Air Canada Centre dating to Feb. 21, 2013.

* The home team has won 18 of the past 20 games between the teams, including 10 straight games.

* Bozak scored his 19th goal of the season, equaling a career-high set in 2013-14. He is 13-for-25 (52.0%) in career tiebreakers, including three game-deciding goals.

* Brandon Kozun scored his second career NHL goal, with Joakim Lindstrom posting the primary assist for his first point in a Maple Leafs uniform. Andrew MacWilliam, Toronto's seventh-round pick (No. 188) in the 2008 NHL Draft, also had an assist on the play while making his NHL debut.

* David Booth had the primary assist on Leo Komarov's goal to extend his point streak to five games (3-2-5).

* Jonathan Bernier stopped 30 shots through overtime and denied all three shootout attempts to reach the 20-win milestone for the second time (26 in 2013-14).

DID YOU KNOW?

Matt Moulson, Tyler Ennis and Johan Larsson each were 1-2-3 and were the only Sabres to register points in the game. Elias says that was the first time in Sabres history that three different players posted at least three points, and no one else from the team found the score sheet.

* It was the first time three different Sabres players posted at least three points in one game, regardless of the other players, since Jan. 31, 2013. In that game, Thomas Vanek went 3-2-5 and Cody Hodgson and Jason Pominville were 1-2-3 at the Boston Bruins (7-4 win).

* Moulson, a native of North York, Ont., went 1-2-3 against the Maple Leafs on Nov. 15. He has 15-8-23 in 23 career games against Toronto. Per Elias, Moulson (11-5-16 in 13 games) leads all visiting players with 11 goals at Air Canada Centre since his first visit in 2009-10; Alex Ovechkin ranks second with nine goals in the building during that span.
