The Arizona Coyotes will go retro on Thursday against the Vancouver Canucks, donning throwback jerseys on a night they will honor former forward Jeremy Roenick.
Another figure from the Coyotes hockey scene will also be honored, just a bit more subtly. Goalie Mike Smith will wear a special mask for the game with rock icon Alice Cooper painted on its back plate.
"The coolest thing about the helmet is the back plate," Smith said in a video on the Coyotes website. "It's a tribute to Alice Cooper, who's been a lifer as a Coyote fan and a big supporter of the team."
The mask, designed by David Arrigo, who designs all of Smith's masks, features the old Coyotes logo, with a trim and color scheme that incorporates elements of the old jersey.
"What is more retro than Alice Cooper!" Arrigo wrote on his website. "I thought the image of Alice's unique look on the back plate would really make this a conversation piece (not to mention I think it would look cool as heck!)."
Smith, who met with Cooper before the game, has played for the Coyotes since 2011 and said he and Arrigo discussed similar designs before.
"It turned out unbelievably; he's been wanting to paint Alice Cooper on my helmet for a few years now," Smith said. "I let him have at it and it's obviously amazing, a tribute to Alice and the support he gives our team, and a throwback to him."
