Smith traded to Sharks by Blackhawks for Desjardins
The San Jose Sharks reportedly acquired center Ben Smith from the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday for center Andrew Desjardins

The San Jose Sharks acquired center Ben Smith and a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft from the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday for center Andrew Desjardins.

Smith, 26, has five goals and four assists in 61 games. A sixth-round pick (No. 169) in the 2008 NHL Draft, Smith has 23 goals and 39 points in 156 games spread across parts of five seasons.

Last season Smith had career-bests of 14 goals and 26 points in 75 games, and six points in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Desjardins, 28, has a career-high five goals and three assists in 56 games. In parts of five seasons with the Sharks, he has 15 goals and 48 points in 272 games.

"He's a feisty player. He's an in-your-face kind of guy. He's a competitive player," Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said. "Those two factors, I think the combination of the business side as well as acquiring a guy that, he's a little bit bigger, he brings a different style to the game, is something that we like as we're leading into crunch time here. He's a very competitive kid. He's very excited to come in here and play a role."
