RED WINGS RALLY TWICE IN THIRD FOR OT WIN . . .

The Detroit Red Wings erased a pair of two-goal deficits in the third period, highlighted by Pavel Datsyuk’s tying goal with 1:48 left in regulation, before Niklas Kronwall completed the comeback by scoring 36 seconds into overtime to defeat the Dallas Stars.

* The Red Wings improved to 33-14-10 (76 points) to keep pace with the Montreal Canadiens (38-16-5, 81 points) and Tampa Bay Lightning (37-18-6, 80 points) – who also won on Saturday – in the Atlantic Division.

* Elias says the Red Wings are the first team to trail by two goals (or more) in the third period, tie the game, and fall behind by at least two goals again before eventually winning since Jan. 16, 1934 when the Toronto Maple Leafs earned a 7-4 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators. In that game, the Maple Leafs trailed 2-0 at the start of the third period before tying the game at 2-2; the Senators then pulled ahead 4-2 before the Maple Leafs forced overtime; they scored three times in the extra period.

* Datsyuk (2-2—4) had his 10th career four-point game (in the regular season) and first since Dec. 18, 2008, (also 2-2—4 vs. the San Jose Sharks). He ranks second on the Red Wings with 19-28—47 in 46 GP, two points behind Henrik Zetterberg (15-34—49 in 57 GP). Datsyuk has 18-30—48 in 40 career games against the Stars.

* Defenseman Jakub Kindl scored two goals in a span of 45 seconds in the opening 1:41 of the third period for his first career multiple-goal game.

* Kronwall (1-1—2), Gustav Nyquist (1-1—2) and Tomas Tatar (0-2—2) also had multiple-point performances for the Red Wings, who earned their sixth straight win at Dallas. They are 9-1-1 in their past 11 overall games against the Stars dating to Nov. 12, 2011.

. . . CANADIENS AND LIGHTNING ALSO POST VICTORIES

Montreal’s Max Pacioretty and Tampa Bay’s Ondrej Palat each scored two goals to help their clubs maintain their leads for the top two spots in the Atlantic Division. The Canadiens moved into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference, where only six points separate the top seven teams.

* Pacioretty scored his 28th and 29th goals of the season and Carey Price stopped 31 shots to help the Canadiens snap a two-game skid and regain sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference by beating the Columbus Blue Jackets.

* Pacioretty has 16-7—23 in 24 games since Dec. 29, including 4-2—6 in his past four games. He recorded his 26th career multiple-goal game and 25th game-winner; his seven GWGs are one shy of the League lead. Pacioretty also scored two goals, including the game-winner, against the Blue Jackets on Jan. 14 when the Canadiens rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the final 8:30 of the third period for a win.

* Price improved to 11-1-2 in his past 14 starts. He leads the League in goals-against average and save percentage and ranks second in wins (33).

* Palat scored twice, including the game-winning goal, to help the Lightning earn their second straight win and improve to 12-3-1 against the Arizona Coyotes dating to Jan. 6, 2002.

* Palat has 3-3—6 in his last four games and ranks fourth on the Lightning with 14-32—46. He recorded his fifth career multigoal game and second this season (also Jan. 15 vs. Edmonton).

* Ryan Callahan (1-1—2) and Anton Stralman (0-2—2) also contributed multiple points for the Lightning. Tampa Bay improved to 19-2-0 when Callahan scores a goal since acquiring him at the NHL Trade Deadline last March.

* Steven Stamkos scored his 32nd goal, into an empty net, to move into sole possession of third in the League. He's one goal ahead of San Jose’s Joe Pavelski.

* Ben Bishop (20 saves) earned his third straight win and 30th of the season (47 GP), moving with three of his career-high, set in 63 games last season.

CAPITALS EDGE ISLANDERS TO CLOSE GAP IN METROPOLITAN

The Washington Capitals surrendered a tying goal to the New York Islanders with 47.8 seconds remaining in regulation, but Evgeny Kuznetsov had the game-deciding goal in the shootout to lift the Washington Capitals to their fourth straight win. Kuznetsov improved to 7-for-13 (53.8%) in tiebreakers, including two deciding goals.

* At 33-17-10 (76 points), the Capitals moved into a tie with the idle new York Rangers (35-16-6, 76 points) – in terms of points – for second place in the Metropolitan Division. They also moved within four points of the first-place Islanders (39-19-2, 80 points).

* The Capitals also earned their eighth win in their past 10 games and improved to 12-2-2 at Verizon Center since Dec. 11.

* Eric Fehr broke a 1-1 deadlock at 14:26 of the third period, snapping an eight-game point drought. He is tied for third on the Capitals with 17 goals in 56 GP, four shy of his career high set in 2009-10 (69 GP). Ten of his 17 goals have come in the third period (8) or overtime (2).

* Nicklas Backstrom extended his assist/point streak to four games (2-5—7). He leads the NHL in assists (46) and points (64). Backstrom has 7-21—28 in 25 games since Dec. 29, including 5-17—22 in his last 17 games.

* Braden Holtby made 17 of his 30 saves in the third period, then denied all three shootout attempts, and is 7-2-1 in his last 10 starts. He is 7-1-2 against the Islanders with a 2.22 goals-against average and .932 save percentage in 10 appearances.

* The Capitals earned points in all four meetings with the Islanders this season (2-0-2) and improved to 6-1-2 in their last nine games against New York since April 4, 2013.

GETZLAF LIFTS DUCKS OVER OILERS

Tied 1-1 in the third period, Ryan Getzlaf scored to help the Anaheim Ducks earn a sweep of their back-to-back set in Alberta by beating the Edmonton Oilers one night after rallying for a 6-3 victory against the Calgary Flames. The Ducks (37-16-7, 81 points) increased their lead atop the Pacific Division and moved within four points of the Nashville Predators (39-13-7, 85 points) for first place in the overall standings.

* Getzlaf scored his fifth game-winning goal of the season. He leads the Ducks with 19-38—57 in 57 GP. He has 14-22—36 in 33 career outings against the Oilers.

* Francois Beauchemin (48-123—171) opened the scoring 45 seconds into the game to surpass Oleg Tverdovsky and move into second place on the franchise’s all-time points list among defensemen.

* In his fifth straight start, John Gibson stopped 26 shots, including 11 in the third period, to improve to 8-4-0 in 13 career appearances.

* Andrew Cogliano (600) became just the third player in NHL history to play at least 600 consecutive games from the start of his career, following Doug Jarvis (964, 1975-88) and Andy Hebenton (630, 1955-64). Cogliano was selected by the Oilers in the first round (No. 25) of the 2005 NHL Draft and played 328 games in four seasons with the club before joining the Ducks in 2011-12.

* Corey Perry played in his 700th NHL game, all with the Ducks, becoming just the second player to suit up in as many games for the franchise (Teemu Selanne, 966).

* The Ducks lead the League with 25 wins in one-goal games and remain the only team without a regulation loss in such scenarios (25-0-7). They also improved to 13-1-1 in Edmonton since Dec. 27, 2007, and 20-3-1 in their past 24 games against with the Oilers since March 31, 2009.

AROUND THE RINKS

Highlights from the rest of Saturday’s action:

* The Pittsburgh Penguins opened a 4-0 lead, powered by 2-1—3 from Blake Comeau, and held on to snap a three-game skid by defeating the St. Louis Blues. The Penguins are 3-1-1 in their past five visits to Scottrade Center. Comeau had three points for the seventh time in his career, equaling a personal-best for the second time this season (3-0—3 Nov. 26 vs. Toronto). Thomas Greiss stopped 21 shots to earn his second straight victory and improve to 7-3-3 in 14 appearances this season. Sidney Crosby had his 40th assist of the season to move into a tie for third place in the NHL, four behind League-leader Nicklas Backstrom.

* The Philadelphia Flyers surrendered the tying goal to the Nashville Predators in the opening minute of the third period, but Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds each tallied in the shootout to lift the Flyers to victory. Philadelphia is 7-1-4 in its past 12 games. Voracek (4-for-5) and Simmonds (4-for-8) each scored their fourth shootout goals of the season; they entered the season 2-for-14 and 2-for-13, respectively. Simmonds also scored in regulation to extend his point streak to a career-high seven games (5-4—9), besting his previous best set from Nov. 25 – Dec. 5, 2009 (4-4—8 w/ the Los Angeles Kings). Rob Zepp stopped 20 shots – including 14 in the third period and overtime – and was perfect in the shootout to record his fourth career win (7 GP).

* The Ottawa Senators scored four unanswered goals, led by 1-2—3 from Kyle Turris, to earn their second straight win and improve to 8-1-0 at home against the Panthers since March 27, 2010. Turris has 5-5—10 in his last eight contests and ranks third on the Senators with 14-26—40 this season; his first-period goal was his 200th NHL point (83-119—202). Milan Michalek (0-2—2) also had multiple points for the Senators, while Erik Karlsson found the back of the net to stretch his point streak to six games (2-8—10). In his second NHL start, Andrew Hammond (4 GP) made 21 saves to earn his second consecutive victory.

* Nazem Kadri (1-1—2) tied the game at 3-3 early in the third period and James van Riemsdyk scored his first career overtime goal to help the Maple Leafs snap a five-game skid (0-4-1) by beating the Winnipeg Jets. Toronto improved to 4-1-1 at Air Canada Centre against the Jets/Atlanta Thrashers dating to Feb. 7, 2011; the Maple Leafs also won for the ninth time in their last 11 home games against Western Conference opponents. Daniel Winnik (1-1—2) and Morgan Rielly (0-2—2) also tallied multiple points. Olli Jokinen had the primary assist on the overtime goal for his first point with the Maple Leafs.

* Tuomo Ruutu, Adam Henrique and Andy Greene sparked the New Jersey Devils to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes to help the club improve to 5-0-1 against the Carolina Hurricanes dating to Nov. 29, 2013. Greene scored his first goal since March 20, 2014, snapping a 70-game drought. Scott Gomez (202-271—473) had an assist on the opening goal to tie Bobby Holik for fifth on the franchise’s all-time points list. Keith Kinkaid (17 saves, 33:59 TOI) and Cory Schneider (14 saves, 26:01 TOI) combined for the victory.

LOOSE PUCKS

The Islanders earned a point for the eighth time in their last 10 games (7-2-1) to increase their lead to four points atop the Metropolitan Division. … Islanders center John Tavares (0-2—2) had his third straight multiple-point game to stretch his point streak to five games (5-6—11). Teammate Travis Hamonic snapped a 31-game goal drought to reach 100 career NHL points. … Stars forward Jamie Benn tallied 1-1—2 to stretch his point streak to six games (7-4—11). … Predators forward Craig Smith (1-0—1) had a point for the fourth straight game (4-2—6). … Defenseman Cody Franson and forward Mike Santorelli each played their first game with the Predators, the club with which they began their NHL careers. They were re-acquired via trade last Sunday. Franson played his first game with Nashville since May 9, 2011, (playoffs vs. the Vancouver Canucks), and Santorelli suited up with the club for the first time since Jan. 7, 2010 (vs. Carolina). … Capitals defenseman Jack Hillen (300) and Devils defenseman Eric Gelinas (100) played in milestone games. … Forwards Matt Puempel (Ottawa) and Kael Mouillierat (Islanders) each made their NHL debut. … Florida’s Gerard Gallant was behind the bench for his 200th game as a NHL coach.
