WHL Roundup: Bjorkstrand's four-point night leads Winterhawks over Americans 5-1

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Oliver Bjorkstrand hit the 40-goal mark by scoring in his fifth straight game and set up three others as the Portland Winterhawks downed the host Tri-City Americans 5-1 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Bjorkstrand has produced eight goals in his past five outings and now has 78 points in 44 contests, which is good for fourth in league scoring.

Paul Bittner added a pair of goals for the Winterhawks (33-20-4), while Nicolas Petan had a goal and two assists. Keegan Iverson tacked on a single goal to round out the attack.

Tyler Sandhu found the back of the net for the Americans (26-29-3).

Portland's Adin Hill made 24 saves for the win as Eric Comrie stopped 45-of-49 shots for Tri-City.

The Winterhawks went 0 for 4 on the power play while the Americans scored once on five chances with the man advantage.

WARRIORS 4 ROYALS 3

VICTORIA — Zach Sawchenko made 26 saves and Jiri Smejkal's goal at 10:42 stood up as the winner as Moose Jaw hung on to defeat the Royals.

Jack Rodewald and Axel Blomqvist scored 31 seconds apart early in the first period for the Warriors (23-30-4) before Tanner Eberle scored to make it 3-0 1:53 into the second.

Alex Forsberg, Regan Nagy and Brandon Fushimi responded for Victoria (32-22-4). Justin Paulic kicked out 21-of-25 shots in defeat.

REBELS 2 RAIDERS 1 (SO)

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Riley Sheen scored the shootout winner as Red Deer slipped past the Raiders to snap a four-game slide.

Scott Feser scored in regulation for the Rebels (29-18-9), who got a 29-save outing from Rylan Toth.

Matteo Gennaro found the back of the net for Prince Albert (23-32-3) while Ryaln Parenteau turned aside 26-of-27 shots in defeat.

HITMEN 4 TIGERS 1

CALGARY — Brendan Burke made 29 saves and Connor Rankin had a goal and an assist as the Hitmen toppled Medicine Hat.

Chase Lang, Adam Tambellini and Radel Fazleev also scored for Calgary (34-18-5), which is 9-1-0 in its past 10 outings.

The Tigers (37-19-3) got their goal from Steven Owre while Nick Schneider stopped 23 shots.

ICE 5 HURRICANES 2

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Matt Alfaro scored twice and set up one more as Kootenay halted the Hurricanes' three-game win streak.

Troy Murray, Austin Vetterl and Tim Bozon also scored for the Ice (29-27-2), while Wyatt Hoflin made 17 saves for the win.

Mike Winther supplied all the offence for Lethbridge (18-33-6). Jayden Sittler stopped 33-of-38 shots in a losing cause.
