RANGERS WIN WILD GAME ON LONG ISLAND

The New York Rangers scored three unanswered goals, capped by Kevin Klein's game-winner with 4:32 remaining in regulation, to earn a 6-5 win against the New York Islanders, their fourth consecutive victory, snapping a three-game skid in the Battle of New York.

* At 34-16-5 (73 points), the Rangers climbed within two points of the Islanders (37-19-1, 75 points) for first place in the Metropolitan Division. The Rangers hold two games in hand and own the ROW tiebreaker (NYR: 32, NYI: 30). The teams will next face off on March 10 at Nassau Coliseum in their final game of the season (NYR: 1-3-0; NYI: 3-1-0).

* The Rangers improved to 15-4-1 against Metropolitan Division rivals, including wins in 12 of their past 14 intradivision games.

* Klein (1-1—2) scored his first goal since Jan. 8 at LAK, ending a 16-game drought. He has 1-6—7 in his past five games and paces all Rangers defensemen with 9-16—25. He has four game-winning goals this season, tied for second among defensemen, after scoring two in his first 433 games.

* The Rangers overcame a 3-1 deficit in the second period when Chris Kreider (1-1—2) and Ryan McDonagh scored 27 seconds apart to tie the score. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, the Rangers rallied from at least two multigoal deficits to win in regulation for the first time since Oct. 26, 1980 (7-6 W vs. DET).

* Cam Talbot made a career-high 38 saves, including 20 in the first period, to earn his fourth straight victory. He improved to 9-5-2 with a 2.51 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 18 games.

* The Rangers swept their four-game road trip, scoring at least five goals in each win (also 5-4 at TOR, 6-3 at COL, 5-1 at ARI). The last time the Rangers scored at least five goals in four consecutive road games was from Jan. 23-31, 1981 (7-4 at EDM, 7-5 at VAN, 6-2 at LAK, 7-3 at MIN).

* McDonagh also scored in the first period for his first career multigoal game. Derek Stepan (1-2—3) had his fourth three-point game of the season, while Martin St. Louis (1-1—2) ended a 15-game goal drought.

PRICE, CANADIENS CREATE SPACE ATOP EAST

Carey Price made 25 saves, including 12 in the second period, to record his fifth shutout of the season and lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-0 victory against the Detroit Red Wings, their fifth win in their past six games (5-0-1).

* The Canadiens (37-15-4, 78 points) opened a two-point lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning (35-18-6, 76 points), who lost in Los Angeles, for first place in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference. The Canadiens also moved into a tie with the idle St. Louis Blues (37-15-4, 78 points) in terms of points for second place in the NHL, four points behind the Nashville Predators (38-12-6, 82 points). Ten teams are within 10 points of first place.

* Price posted his 30th career shutout (all w/ MTL), surpassing Patrick Roy for sole possession of fifth place on the franchise's all-time list; only George Hainsworth (75), Jacques Plante (58), Ken Dryden (46) and Bill Durnan (34) have more.

* Price also is the first Canadiens goalie to record a shutout at Joe Louis Arena. Michel Larocque was the last Montreal goalie to blank the Red Wings in Detroit, in a 6-0 win at Olympia Stadium on March 27, 1977.

* Price extended his personal winning streak to five games, posting a 0.98 GAA, .963 save percentage and one shutout in that span. Overall, Price leads the NHL in GAA (1.93) and save percentage (.935) and ranks second with 32 wins.

* Tomas Plekanec (1-1—2) broke the scoreless tie with 2:30 left in regulation with his fourth game-winner of the season (30th of his career). He has 2-3—5 in his past four games. Max Pacioretty (1-1—2) scored into the empty net to increase his team-leading goals (26) and points (48) totals.

* The Canadiens have won five consecutive games against the Red Wings dating to March 27, 2014. The last time that happened was a 6-0-0 stretch from Oct. 10, 1991 to Dec. 18, 1993. The teams will play once more in 2014-15, on April 9 at Bell Centre.

FLAMES RALLY (AGAIN), CANUCKS HOLD ON TO KEEP PACE IN PACIFIC

The Calgary Flames (32-22-3, 67 points) staged another late rally to defeat the Boston Bruins 4-3 in overtime, passing the idle San Jose Sharks (29-21-8, 66 points) and moving into a tie with the Vancouver Canucks (32-21-3, 67 points) in terms of points for second place in the Pacific Division. The Canucks held on for a 3-2 win against the Minnesota Wild on Monday.

* TJ Brodie scored the game-winning goal with 2.4 seconds left in overtime to help the Flames overcome an early 3-0 deficit and earn their first win over the Bruins since Oct. 30, 2008 (0-5-0 since). Calgary recorded its NHL-leading 10th win when trailing after two periods and improved to 11-3 past regulation (OT: 8-2, SO: 3-1).

* The Flames also climbed from a 3-0 hole to win in overtime on Dec. 22 when Johnny Gaudreau forced the extra period with his first career hat trick and Mark Giordano scored the winner. Per Elias, the last time a team trailed by at least three goals and won in overtime twice in one season was 2011-12 (WPG).

* Brodie scored his second career overtime goal (also Jan. 28, 2014 vs. CHI) and sixth career game-winner. He extended career highs in goals and points, bringing his totals to 9-25—34 in 57 GP.

* Giordano equaled a career high with three assists (also Mar. 26, 2011 at EDM), including the primary assist on the tying and winning goals. He is tied for eighth in the NHL with a career-high 36 assists and paces all defensemen with 47 points (tying a personal best).

* Jiri Hudler scored twice in the third period, including the tying goal with 5:09 left in regulation. Sean Monahan (0-2—2) had his second straight two-point game, while David Jones (3-2—5) and Johnny Gaudreau (0-4—4) extended point streaks to four games.

* Jonas Hiller made 16 saves in relief of Karri Ramo to earn his 19th win of the season.

* Making his NHL debut, Alex Biega scored his first career NHL goal to lift the Canucks to their third straight win at Rogers Arena and 12th victory in their past 15 home games against the Wild (12-2-1 since March 3, 2009).

* Biega, a fifth-round pick (No. 147) of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2006 NHL Draft, became the fourth Canucks player to score his first NHL goal this season (Linden Vey, Oct. 11 vs. EDM; Bo Horvat, Nov. 20 vs. ANA; and Ronalds Kenins, Feb. 1 vs. MIN). Per Elias, Biega is the first Canucks defenseman to score a goal in his NHL debut since Lee Sweatt found the back of the net vs. NSH on Jan. 26, 2011.

* Eddie Lack made 20 saves to win his third straight decision. Overall, he is 6-6-2 with a 2.53 GAA and .914 save percentage in 18 GP.

* Henrik Sedin had 1-1—2 to take over the Canucks scoring lead with 10-38—48, one point ahead of brother, Daniel Sedin (13-34—47).

JETS RALLY TO STAY AHEAD IN WILD-CARD RACE

Andrew Ladd tied the score with 4:04 left in regulation, the third time the Winnipeg Jets tied the game, and Blake Wheeler scored in the shootout to help them to a 5-4 win against the Edmonton Oilers, their fourth win in their past five games.

* At 30-19-10 (70 points), the Jets opened a four-point lead on the idle Sharks (29-21-8, 66 points) for the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference and pulled within four points of the idle Chicago Blackhawks (35-18-4, 74 points) for third place in the Central Division.

* Per Elias, the Jets tied a game at least three times and won for the first time since relocating from Atlanta. The last time that happened was on Dec. 17, 2009 when Rich Peverley (2-1—3) and Maxim Afinogenov (1-2—3) helped guide the Thrashers to a 6-5 OT win against the Stars.

* Bryan Little (2-1—3) had at least three points for the fourth time this season. It also was his first multigoal game since Dec. 5 when he established a career high with 3-1—4 vs. COL.

* Ladd reached the 20-goal mark for the fourth time in his career. He has 20-27—47 this season, which ranks second on the Jets behind Little (23-26—49).

* Tyler Myers scored his first goal with the Jets. Wheeler netted his third career game-deciding goal; he and Toby Enstrom each had two assists.

* Michael Hutchinson made 18 saves to improve to 3-0-1 in his past four appearances, all of which have required extra time. Hutchinson leads rookie goaltenders with 17 wins in 28 games.

* The Jets improved to 7-2-1 at MTS Centre in the 2015 calendar year after beginning the season with an 8-8-3 record on home ice.

AROUND THE RINKS

Highlights from the other three games Monday:

* Jordan Nolan broke a tie early in the third period and Jeff Carter scored the eventual game-winning goal to lift the Los Angeles Kings to their fifth consecutive win, 3-2 against the Lightning. At 26-18-12 (64 points), the Kings are the first team outside of the Stanley Cup Playoff picture in the West. They moved to within two points of the idle Sharks (29-21-8, 66 points) for the first wild-card spot; Los Angeles holds two games in hand, but San Jose owns the ROW tiebreaker (SJS: 27, LAK: 25). Jonathan Quick (21 saves) has been in net for each win on the Kings' current streak, posting a 2.20 GAA and .911 save percentage during that span. The Kings improved to 19-6-6 (44 points) at Staples Center this season. Their 44 points through 31 home games are a franchise record, eclipsing the previous mark of 43 achieved in 1974-75 and 2005-06.

* Five different goal scorers helped the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-2 win against the Arizona Coyotes, their second straight win. The Avalanche improved to 24-22-11 (59 points) to keep pace in the West playoff race; they are five points behind the Sharks (29-21-8, 66 points), who occupy the first wild-card spot, with one game in hand (ROW – SJS: 27, COL: 17). Jarome Iginla had 0-2—2 to extend his point streak to four games (2-5—7). Iginla (578-629—1,207) passed Vincent Damphousse (432-773—1,205) into 45th place on the NHL all-time points list. Matt Duchene (1-1—2), Cody McLeod, Gabriel Landeskog, Tyson Barrie and Nick Holden all scored for Colorado; Duchene (120-180—300) and McLeod (55-45—100) each reached career point milestones.

* The Ottawa Senators tied the game on three occasions but multipoint efforts by Andrej Nestrasil (1-2—3), Michal Jordan (1-1—2) and Nathan Gerbe (1-1—2) helped the Carolina Hurricanes end a two-game skid with a 6-3 win. Nestrasil had his first career multipoint game, while Jordan had his first NHL goal and multipoint game (23 GP). Cam Ward made 29 saves to improve to 3-1-0 in his past four games. Carolina has points in nine of its past 10 games with Ottawa dating to Dec. 23, 2011 (8-1-1).

Canucks forward Chris Higgins extended his assist/point streak to five games (0-6—6), while Jannik Hansen had his 100th NHL assist . . . Nino Niederreiter (2-0—2) scored both Wild goals . . . Former Canuck Jordan Schroeder assisted on two goals; he has 1-2—3 in two games against Vancouver . . . John Tavares scored 11 seconds after the opening faceoff, the fastest Islanders goal to start a game since Jan. 10, 1994 (Pierre Turgeon, 0:11 vs. OTT) . . . Senators forward Mike Hoffman scored his rookie-leading 20th goal of the season; only Alexei Yashin (30, 1993-94) and Daniel Alfredsson (26, 1995-96) have scored more as a rookie with the club . . . Teammate Erik Karlsson had 0-2—2 to extend his point streak to four games (1-6—7) . . . Kings forward Dwight King (0-2—2) extended his point streak to four games (3-4—7), establishing a new personal best . . .
