Staal, Rangers agree to terms on contract extension
The New York Rangers and defenseman Marc Staal have agreed to terms on a contract extension, the team announced Sunday after a 5-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Defenseman Marc Staal and the New York Rangers agreed to terms on a contract extension, the Rangers announced Sunday after a 5-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Terms were not disclosed, but ESPN.com reported a six-year extension with an average annual value of $5.7 million, a full no-trade clause in the first three years and a full-no movement clause.

"Marc has been one of the cornerstones of our team since he arrived in New York," Rangers general manager Glen Sather said in a statement. "His commitment and perseverance to the Rangers, and the game of hockey, has been an inspiration for everyone in the organization, and he has become a role model for young players and veterans alike. We are excited that he will continue to provide that leadership in a Rangers uniform."

Staal will sign the contract Sunday.

"It's the place I want to be," Staal said via the Rangers Twitter account. "I've had great time growing up in this organization and have a lot of respect for what they do."

Staal, who would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has two goals and six assists in 42 games this season. The No. 12 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft has 29 goals and 119 points in 503 regular-season games.

"It's been fun winning games with the guys in this room ... this is the right choice [for me],"Staal said.
