OHL's Whalers on the move to Flint pending league approval of sale

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - The Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers are being sold to a group that will move the team to Flint, Mich., pending league approval.

The Whalers announced Wednesday that owner Peter Karamanos has agreed to sell the team to IMS Hockey Corporation, which recently purchased the 4,021-seat Perani Arena in Flint.

The Whalers franchise, celebrating its 25th anniversary this season, became the first American team in the OHL when Karamanos was awarded an expansion team for the 1990-91 season.

Originally known as the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors, the team was initially based in Detroit before moving to nearby Plymouth for the 1997-98 season.

Plymouth won the OHL championship in 2007, but are last in the Western Conference so far this season with a 13-23-3 record.

Dallas Stars sniper Tyler Seguin played in Plymouth for two seasons before being selected second overall by Boston at the 2010 NHL draft.

Other former Whalers include Ottawa forward David Legwand, Los Angeles forward Justin Williams and retired defenceman Bryan Berard.
