NEW YORK, N.Y. - Frans Nielsen's short-handed tally capped the Islanders' three-goal second period, Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves in his fourth shutout of the season, and Long Island's team cooled off the New York Rangers with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night.

The Rangers had won five straight and 13 of 14 — a run punctuated by a three-game California sweep last week — but the Eastern Conference-leading Islanders finished a seven-game road trip with their third straight win.

Shortly after the Islanders had a goal waved off because of interference in the crease, Anders Lee broke the scoreless deadlock at 8:49 of the second with his 11th goal. Nikolay Kulemin made it 2-0 with 3:39 left, and Nielsen capped the scoring with the Islanders' NHL-leading seventh short-handed goal of the season in the final minute of the period.

JETS 8, PANTHERS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Mathieu Perreault scored four goals to tie a franchise record as Winnipeg cruised past Florida.

Dustin Byfuglien added two goals and an assist and Jay Harrison and Evander Kane also scored for the Jets, who have coach Paul Maurice his 500th win as a head coach. The eight-goal output was a season high for the Jets, one short of the franchise record.

Perreault tied the franchise record for most goals in a game. Ilya Kovalchuk was the last to do it for the Thrashers in 2005 and Pascal Rheaume had the first one.

Dave Bolland and Brad Boyes scored for Florida, which finished 4-2-0 on a six-game trip.

SHARKS 3, COYOTES 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Brenden Dillon scored his first goal of the season in the third period and Antti Niemi stopped 27 shots to lift San Jose past Arizona.

Joe Pavelski scored his 22nd goal early in the second period and Tomas Hertl scored just over a minute later for the Sharks. Dillon scored his first goal in 62 games early in the third period on a deflected shot and Niemi made some big saves down the stretch to give San Jose a victory before opening a seven-game homestand.

Mikkel Boedker scored in his third straight game and Shane Doan also had a goal before sitting out most of the third period with a right leg injury. Devan Dubnyk stopped 22 shots for Arizona, which has lost four of six.

SENATORS 5, STARS 4

DALLAS (AP) — John Klingberg scored two goals in a four-goal second period when Dallas rallied from two down to take a two-goal lead.

Trevor Daley and Erik Cole also scored in the second, as Dallas took a 5-3 lead.

Anders Lindback stopped all 14 Ottawa shots in the period. He made 34 saves and gave up two goals in relief.

Starter Kari Lehtonen allowed two goals in five shots while playing just 10:30 before his earliest exit this season.

Ottawa's Mike Hoffman, Clarke MacArthur and Jared Cowen each scored in the first period. Milan Michalek added a third-period goal.

Dallas' Cole and Ales Hemsky each had a goal and an assist.

PENGUINS 7, WILD 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — David Perron scored twice and added an assist to lead Pittsburgh.

Paul Martin, Kris Letang and Chris Kunitz each had a goal and an assist for the Penguins. Marcel Goc and Brandon Sutter also scored for Pittsburgh.

Sidney Crosby had three assists for the Penguins, who had little trouble with the floundering Wild. Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves, including several key stops early to give his teammates time to find a rhythm.

Niklas Backstrom stopped 29 of the 35 shots before being pulled following Letang's goal midway through the third period. Jonas Brodin and Justin Fontaine scored for the Wild, who never led.

Minnesota has lost six straight and 12 of its last 14.

RED WINGS 3, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Petr Mrazek made 25 saves in his first start in place of injured starting goalie Jimmy Howard, and Detroit beat Buffalo.

Darren Helm, Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar scored for the Red Wings, who have won three of four.

Mike Weber scored for the Sabres, who have lost eight straight.

The Sabres honoured Hall of Fame goalie Dominik Hasek by retiring his No. 39 in a pregame ceremony. Hasek starred for Buffalo from 1992-01, winning six Vezina Trophies and consecutive Hart Memorial Trophies in 1997 and 1998, before being traded to Detroit, where he won Stanley Cups in 2002 and 2008.

HURRICANES 3, AVALANCHE 2, SO

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Victor Rask and Elias Lindholm scored shootout goals, while Anton Khudobin stoned both Colorado shots as Carolina stymied the Avalanche's comeback.

Jordan Staal scored his first of the season and Patrick Dwyer the other goal for the Hurricanes, who have won five straight home games against the Avalanche with one in overtime and the other in the shootout.

Matt Duchene and John Mitchell scored third period goals for the Avalanche.

Khudobin had 28 saves for the Hurricanes, 4-1-1 in their last six, while Colorado's Calvin Pickard stopped 44 shots.

Carolina has not allowed a power-play goal in a franchise-record 11 games. Each team was penalized just once during the game.

BRUINS 4, LIGHTNING 3

BOSTON (AP) — Rookie David Pastrnak scored twice for the second straight game and Milan Lucic had a goal and an assist as Boston won its fourth straight.

Brad Marchand also scored and Torey Krug and David Krejci had two assists each for the Bruins, who held the Lightning to 16 shots.

Pastrnak, called up from Providence of the AHL on Jan. 6, scored his first two career goals Saturday in Boston's 3-1 win at Philadelphia. Boston's first-round draft pick in 2014, Pastrnak doubled his total against the Lightning as the Bruins continued gaining ground in the Eastern Conference standings by improving to 5-0-3 in their last eight games.

Steven Stamkos scored two goals for Tampa Bay, giving him 25 for the season. Ben Bishop had 30 saves.

BLUES 4, OILERS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 24th goal and had an assist, defenceman Barret Jackman earned his second two-point night of the season, and St. Louis won its fifth straight.

Benoit Pouliot scored twice in the third period for Edmonton, but the Oilers mustered a season-low 15 shots and never got closer than a two-goal deficit.

David Backes also had a goal and assist while Jaden Schwartz and Alexander Steen had goals for St. Louis, which allowed just 15 shots — a season best — to make it somewhat easy on goalie Jake Allen.

Ben Scrivens made 25 saves but fell to 0-5-5 on the road for Edmonton, which is 0-7-6 during a 13-game road losing streak. The Oilers are last overall in the NHL with a league-low two road victories.

PREDATORS 5, CANUCKS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Colin Wilson had two goals and two assists and Craig Smith added a power-play goal to lead Nashville.

The Predators lost goalie Pekka Rinne, who leads the NHL with 29 wins, to a lower-body injury in the third period. He had stopped 20 of 21 shots before being replaced by Carter Hutton.

Filip Forsberg and Mike Fisher also scored for Nashville, winners of four straight. Mike Ribeiro had two assists.

Rinne was hurt when Vancouver forward Chris Higgins drove toward the Predators net and became entangled with Nashville defenceman Anton Volchenkov. The pair then collided with Rinne, and their momentum carried the Finn into the end boards.

Alexander Edler had the lone goal for Vancouver, which has lost its last three.
