Halak was placed on IR on Saturday, retroactive to Dec. 20, with a lower-body injury. He is 18-6-0 with a 2.24 goals-against average, a .919 save percentage and three shutouts.

Goalie Kevin Poulin was reassigned to the Islanders' American Hockey League affiliate in Bridgeport. Poulin allowed three goals on 26 shots in New York's 4-3 shootout loss Saturday to the Buffalo Sabres.

The Islanders, in second place in the Metropolitan Division with 47 points, face the Washington Capitals on Monday at Nassau Coliseum before starting a seven-game road trip Wednesday at the Winnipeg Jets.
