Blue Jackets acquire forward Morin from Blackhawks
The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired forward Jeremy Morin from the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Tim Erixon.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired forward Jeremy Morin from the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Tim Erixon.

Morin, a healthy scratch the past 11 games, had 28 shots on goal and 15 penalty minutes in 15 games for the Blackhawks this season. A second-round pick (No. 45) of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2009 NHL Draft, Morin has eight goals and 16 points in 54 NHL games. He signed a two-year contract extension with the Blackhawks on June 27.

"Jeremy is a young, strong forward with a very good shot, who has been a productive offensive player throughout his career," Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen told the team's official website. "Given our depth at defense, this was an opportunity for us to add a very good player with a lot of potential on the other end."

Erixon, the son of retired NHL player Jan Erixon, had a goal and six points for the Blue Jackets. The No. 23 pick of the Calgary Flames in the 2009 draft, Erixon has 13 points in 70 NHL games. He was traded to the Blue Jackets with Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov and a 2013 first-round pick by the New York Rangers for Rick Nash, Steven Delisle and a 2013 conditional third-round pick on July 23, 2012.

The Blue Jackets activated Cody Goloubef (knee) from injured reserve on Dec. 10 and loaned him to Springfield of the American Hockey League for a conditioning assignment. They also expect Fedor Tyutin (knee) back this week, which created a logjam on defense.

"They needed a defenseman," Kekalainen said, according to the Columbus Dispatch. "We had too many defensemen, and we needed a forward. That's two needs met, and we got a deal done. That's sometimes when the best trades happen, when two teams have needs that you can meet."
