The Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday traded defenseman Philip Samuelsson to the Arizona Coyotes for forward Rob Klinkhammer and a conditional draft pick.
Klinkhammer, a 6-foot-3, 214-pound left wing, has three goals and in 19 games this season. Last season he set career highs with 11 goals and 20 points in 72 games.
Injuries have left the Penguins thin at forward. Pascal Dupuis (blood clot), Chris Kunitz (foot) and Beau Bennett (lower body) are out, and Patric Hornqvist left the game Thursday against the Vancouver Canucks in the second period after a hit by Ryan Stanton.
"[Patric is] still being evaluated," coach Mike Johnston told the Penguins website. "We'll find out how he is (Saturday) morning after they do more evaluations on him.
"Standard protocol is to check every area. He's seeing our doctors, doing his baseline test and they'll determine where he's at."
The Penguins recalled forward Bryan Rust from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
Klinkhammer, 28, has 19 goals and 36 points in 129 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators and Coyotes,
Samuelsson, 23, was a second-round pick (No. 61) by the Penguins in the 2009 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut last season, with five shots on goal and a minus-1 rating in five games. In 22 games this season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the 6-foot-2, 194-pound defenseman has four assists and a minus-3 rating.
In Arizona he'll join his younger brother Henrik Samuelsson, a first-round pick (No. 27) of the Coyotes in 2012. Henrik plays for the Coyotes' AHL team, the Portland Pirates.
The Coyotes recalled defenseman Andrew Campbell and forward Jordan Martinook from Portland of the AHL and sent down defenseman David Schlemko.
