Flames defenceman Mark Giordano named NHL's first star for November

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Calgary Flames defenceman Mark Giordano is the NHL's first star for the month of November.

Giordano excelled on both sides of the ice for Calgary last month. The Flames captain led all defencemen with 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in 13 games while also leading the NHL with a plus-12 defensive rating.

St. Louis Blues right-wing Vladimir Tarasenko was named November's second star, while Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne was awarded the month's third star. Rinne's teammate, forward Filip Forsberg, took rookie of the month honours.

Earlier, New York Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak, Tampa Bay right-wing Ryan Callahan and Calgary goaltender Karri Ramo were named the league's three stars of the week.

Giordano opened the month with points in seven straight games, extending his overall streak to nine games (five goals, nine assists) and matching the longest stretch of his NHL career.

He also recorded his 20th point in his 18th game of the season, becoming the fastest Flames defenceman to reach the milestone since Al MacInnis in 1993-94.

Tarasenko had 10 goals and seven assists in November to lift the Blues to an 11-3-1 record for the month and a share of the top spot in the league standings.

Rinne led the NHL with 10 wins and also placed in the top five in goals-against average (1.70) and save percentage (.938), backstopping the Predators to a 10-3-0 November record and the top spot in the Central Division.

Forsberg led all rookies with nine goals, 15 points and a plus-9 rating in 13 games.

Halak posted a 3-0-0 record with a 0.95 goals-against average, .964 save percentage and one shutout last week to help the Islanders post an 11-3-0 record for the month and complete their best November in 34 years.

Callahan had three goals and two assists in two games to power the Lightning (16-6-2) to a pair of victories and a share of first place in the league standings

Ramo posted back-to-back shutouts, stopping all 58 shots he faced in wins over San Jose and Arizona.
