WHL Roundup: Silvertips' Scherbak leaves on stretcher in shootout win over Thunderbirds

KENT, Wash. - Montreal Canadiens 2014 first-round draft pick Nikita Scherbak of the Western Hockey League's Everett Silvertips left Saturday's 3-2 shootout win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on a stretcher.

Scherbak was hit in the second period by Seattle's Keegan Kolesar and was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The game was delayed 10 minutes as medical staff attended the 18-year-old forward.

Although it is not known the severity of the injury, the Silvertips (15-4-3) indicated that he passed a motor test with success. Kolesar was not penalized on the play.

Carter Cochrane scored the shootout winner for Everett with Patrick Bajkov and Graham Millar finding the back of the net in regulation.

Justin Hickman and Kolesar supplied the offence for the Thunderbirds (9-11-4).

The Silvertips' Austin Lotz made 31 saves for the win while Taran Kozun turned aside 29 shots in the loss.

Everett scored once on four power-play chances while Seattle was 1 for 3 on the man advantage.

SASKATOON — Coda Gordon scored his 13th goal of the season 2:56 into overtime as Swift Current edged the Blades.

Brett Lernout led the charge offensively, recording a hat trick for Swift Current (14-9-4). Andreas Schumacher had two goals and two assists, while Glenn Gawdin and Jake DeBrusk also chipped in.

Josh Uhrich had two goals for the Blades (6-16-1), who lost their fourth straight. Nikita Soshnin, Ryan Graham, Austin Adamson, Sam McKechnie and Brett Stovin rounded out the attack.

WHEAT KINGS 5 OIL KINGS 4 (OT)

BRANDON, Man. — Tim McGauley scored his second of the game for the Wheat Kings in overtime as they defeated Edmonton.

Jayce Hawryluk, Jesse Gabrielle and Nolan Patrick supplied the rest of the offence for Brandon (19-5-1).

Lane Bauer had two goals and an assist for the Oil Kings (12-9-4) with Mads Eller and Cole Benson adding the others.

WARRIORS 5 HURRICANES 1

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Jaimen Yakubowski started Moose Jaw's scoring 2:34 into the second period en route to a win over the Hurricanes.

Dustin Perillat, Tanner Eberle, Torrin White and Austin Adam all scored for the Warriors (10-11-3).

Tyler Wong had a second-period goal for Lethbridge (5-14-4), which hasn't won in eight games.

RED DEER, Alta. — Rylan Toth made 23 saves as the Rebels shut out Calgary.

Scott Feser led Red Deer's (13-9-3) offence with a goal and three assists. Evan Polei, Wyatt Johnson and Brett Cote also scored for the Rebels.

Mack Shields kicked out 17 shots for the Hitmen (12-9-3), for their first loss in eight games.

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Wyatt Hoflin turned away 48 shots and record the shutout as Kootenay blanked the Tigers.

Jaedon Descheneau, Matt Alfaro and Levi Cable found the back of the net for the Ice (10-14-0).

Nick Schneider made 23 saves for Medicine Hat (16-6-2).

COUGARS 4 GIANTS 3

VANCOUVER — Zach Pochiro scored his second of the game at 18:48 of the third period to help Prince George defeat the Giants.

Brad Morrison and Kody McDonald rounded out the attack for the Cougars (13-13-0).

Matt Bellerive struck twice for Vancouver (9-15-0), which lost its third straight. Carter Popoff had the other Giants goal.

WINTERHAWKS 4 ROCKETS 3

KELOWNA, B.C. — Chase De Leo scored his 15th of the season on the power play as Portland held on to beat the Rockets for the second straight night.

Miles Koules, Dominic Turgeon and Oliver Bjorkstrand supplied the rest of the offence for the Winterhawks (11-12-3).

Rourke Chartier had two goals and an assist for Kelowna (21-2-3) with Madison Bowey adding the other goal. It was the Rockets first regulation loss in 15 games.

KENEWICK, Wash. — Calder Brooks scored the eventual winner in the second period as Spokane edged the Americans.

Riley Whittingham scored nine seconds earlier for the Chiefs (11-7-3).

Beau McCue opened the scoring with his 10th of the season on the power play for Tri-City (14-10-0).

VICTORIA — Jayden Sittler turned aside 33 shots as the Royals blanked Regina to snap the Pats' five-game winning streak.

Travis Brown scored twice for Victoria (14-11-2) with Austin Carroll, Taylor Crunk and Jared Dmytriw also chipping in with goals.

Jordan Hollett made 21 saves for the Pats (13-10-1).
