ISLANDERS TAKE FIRST OF HOME-AND-HOME AGAINST PENGUINS

Kyle Okposo scored the deciding goal in the shootout New York Islanders after the Pittsburgh Penguins rallied from a two-goal deficit to force extra time in the first of a home-and-home series between the top two teams in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders (13-6-0, 26 points) trail the first-place Penguins (13-3-2, 28 points) by two points for the division lead. The teams meet again at Nassau Coliseum on Saturday night.

* The Islanders improved to 8-1-0 this season in games decided by one goal. They are 4-0-0 in shootouts.

* Okposo has converted on all four of his shootout attempts this season and is tied with Anaheim’s Jakob Silfverberg for first in the NHL with four shootout goals.

* Ryan Strome (1-2—3) set a career high with three points.

* Matt Martin, Nikolay Kulemin and Strome scored within a span of 1:35 in the first period.

WORKHORSE SCHNEIDER STARS IN DEVILS WIN

Making a career-high 20th consecutive start, Cory Schneider made 29 saves for his second shutout of the season (14th of his career) in the New Jersey Devils' 2-0 road win against the Edmonton Oilers. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Schneider (20) passed Martin Brodeur (19 straight to open 2001-02) for the franchise record for most consecutive starts to open a season. Schneider is also just the third netminder since 2005-06 to make 20 (or more) consecutive starts to begin a season: Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks (43) and Miikka Kiprusoff of the Calgary Flames (23) did so during the 2007-08 season.

* With the victory, Schneider improved to 9-8-2 with a 2.58 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.

* Adam Henrique (game-winner) and Tuomo Ruutu scored for the Devils and Eric Gelinas (0-2—2) had his second multiple-point game of the season and the sixth of his career.

BRUINS OUTLAST BLUE JACKETS IN SHOOTOUT

In his second career NHL game, Alex Khokhlachev scored the lone goal of seven shootout rounds to give the Boston Bruins a 4-3 road win against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Bruins have won six straight games against the Blue Jackets and in a row in Columbus. Boston has not lot at Nationwide Arena since March 10, 2009.

* Down 2-0 after 40 minutes, Dennis Seidenberg started a Bruins rally when his slap shot from center ice beat goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Boston then took the lead with goals from Matt Fraser and Daniel Paille before Columbus’ Jack Johnson scored to force extra time.

* Defenseman Matt Bartkowski (0-2—2) recorded his first multiple-point game of the season and the second of his NHL career. His first came on Nov. 15, 2013, when he had two assists against the Ottawa Senators.
