Arizona State elevates men's ice hockey team to Division I after winning 2014 ACHA title

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State is elevating its hockey program to Division I.

The Sun Devils won the 2014 ACHA national championship in hockey last season and will phase into Division I over the next three years.

Arizona State will play a hybrid schedule of games mixed between Division I and ACHA competition before playing a full Division I schedule as an independent in 2016. The Sun Devils plan to align with a conference when they fully transition to Division I in 2017.

Arizona State is the first school from a power five conference to add men's ice hockey since Penn State in 2012.

The school plans to add a varsity women's sport in the near future to remain in compliance with Title IX.
