Rookie Josh Jooris playing beyond his age in Flames 4-2 win over Senators

CALGARY - Rookie Josh Jooris had a goal and an assist Saturday night to lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators. Tied 1-1 entering the third period, Calgary went ahead at 2:29 on Markus Granlund's third goal as the first-year forward finished a set-up from Lance Bouma.

Bouma had just gotten out of the penalty box when he intercepted the puck at the Flames blue-line and broke into the offensive zone. But unable to gain separation, he stopped up instead and made a play to get the puck to Granlund, who beat Craig Anderson over the shoulder.

Jooris, 24, scored the eventual game winner, his fourth of the season, at 5:37 on the power play. Set up by Curtis Glencross, he wristed a shot past Anderson from the slot.

Paul Byron and Lance Bouma also scored for Calgary (11-6-2). The Flames have won six of their last eight including the first two of its five-game homestand, which continues Tuesday against Anaheim.

Clarke MacArthur with his team-leading eighth goal and Bobby Ryan found the back of the net for Ottawa (8-5-4). The Senators finished up 1-1-1 on their three-game Western Canada road trip. They are not back in action again until Thursday when they host Nashville.

Ottawa climbed back to within a goal again on Ryan's wraparound goal at 7:51 of the third period.

However, a mistake by Anderson helped Calgary restore its two-goal cushion.

Anderson came out of his net but mishandled the puck and gave it away to Bouma in the slot, who fired in his fifth goal of the season, tying his career-high set last year.

The Senators got a 1:02 two-man advantage late in the third period but could not convert with Bouma and Jooris both playing key roles in that penalty kill for the Flames.

Down 1-0 after the first period, Calgary tied it 1-1 at 8:12 of the second when Byron was sprung on a breakaway by a slick 50-foot saucer pass from Sven Baertschi and he made no mistake, sharply wristing a shot over Craig Anderson's glove.

Ottawa scored first at 12:17 when MacArthur's shot from 40 feet out beat Karri Ramo over his blocker.

It was just before that when the Flames got a injury scare. Captain Mark Giordano, who leads NHL defencemen in scoring, got hit near his left eye by Chris Neil, who caught him with the tip of his stick on the follow-through of a shot.

Giordano missed the remainder of the period but returned to start the second period. However, he was sporting a visor, which he normally does not wear, and the area around his eye was noticeably dark and swollen. He reportedly received four stitches in his eyelid.

Ramo made just his second start in the last nine games for Calgary. In his previous start in Florida, he lasted only 33 minutes before being pulled by coach Bob Hartley after giving up four goals on 22 shots.

He finished with 23 saves to improve to 3-2-1.

Anderson, who was originally drafted by the Flames in 1999 although he never signed, had 21 saves. His record falls to 5-3-3.
