HOCKEY HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES HONORED

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs faced off in the annual Hockey Hall of Fame Game, which precedes Monday’s induction ceremony. This year’s inductees – Rob Blake, Peter Forsberg, Dominik Hasek and Mike Modano (Player category); Pat Burns (Builder category) - posthumously, represented by his wife Lynn Burns; Bill McCreary (Referee/Linesman category) were honored and participated in a ceremonial faceoff.

OKPOSO, HALAK LIFT ISLANDERS TO FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN

Down 3-1 midway through the third period, the Florida Panthers scored twice to force extra time but Kyle Okposo scored the game-deciding goal in the shootout to lift the New York Islanders to their fifth consecutive victory.

* At 11-5-0 (22 points) the Islanders are in second place in the Metropolitan Division, one point behind the Penguins (11-3-1). They have 11 wins through 16 games for the fifth time in their history (also: 1976-77, 1982-83, 1987-88, 2001-02).

* Okposo has converted on seven of 20 career shootout attempts, including five game-deciding goals. Frans Nielsen also scored in the tiebreaker to improve to 35-for-63 (55.6%) in his career; his 35 shootout goals are tied for fourth among active skaters.

* Jaroslav Halak had his personal shutout streak snapped at 156:04 when Jimmy Hayes scored at 12:37 of the first period. But he stopped 35 shots – and two of three shootout attempts – to win his fourth straight game. He is 9-1-0 with a 1.80 goals-against average, a .941 save percentage and two shutouts in games against the Panthers.

* ICYMI: Halak pinned the puck under the crossbar for an unconventional save to keep the Islanders ahead.

* The Islanders’ team shutout streak ended at 193:48, just 5:26 shy of the franchise record (199:14) set from March 31 to April 8, 1998.

* The Islanders have won six of their last eight games against the Panthers, dating to a 3-2 shootout victory on March 25, 2012 (6-2-0).

JOHANSEN, POWER-PLAY HELPS BLUE JACKETS END SKID

Ryan Johansen assisted on all four goals by the Columbus Blue Jackets and James Wisniewski scored his first two goals of the season, including the game-winner, as Columbus won for the first time in 10 games (1-8-1) by holding off the Philadelphia Flyers.

* Johansen established career-highs for assists and points in a game. He has points in 13 of 16 games this season, including five multiple-point performances, and leads the club with in assists (14) and points (20).

* Wisniewski scored two power-play goals for his second career multigoal game (also Dec. 31, 2010 at Florida). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Wisniewski is just the second Blue Jackets defenseman to score multiple power-play goals in a game, following Bryan Berard who accomplished the feat on Nov. 18, 2005 (2) and Jan. 8, 2006 (3).

* Nick Foligno also scored a power-play goal as the Blue Jackets went 3-for-4 with the man advantage. It was their first road game with at least three power-play goals since Nov. 17, 2013, at the Ottawa Senators, when the scored three in a 4-1 win.

* Foligno (2-1—3) equaled his career high for goals and points; he leads the club with nine goals this season.

* Tim Erixon recorded two assists to match a career-high set Nov. 8 vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning.

* After going winless in their first six visits in Philadelphia, the Blue Jackets have won their past two games at Wells Fargo Center.

HANZAL'S HAT TRICK POWERS COYOTES

Martin Hanzal scored two goals in a span of nine seconds in the second period to complete a natural hat trick and power the Arizona Coyotes past the Vancouver Canucks.

* Hanzal’s hat trick was the second of his career (also Dec. 4, 2008 vs. Toronto), and his three points were his highest total since Nov. 16, 2013, when he went 1-3—4 against Tampa Bay. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Hanzal is the sixth player in Coyotes history to score a natural hat trick and the first since Radim Vrbata on Oct. 3, 2013.

* Devan Dubnyk stopped 35 shots for his ninth career shutout and first since Dec. 27, 2013, while with the Edmonton Oilers. He improved to 3-0-1 with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage in five games this season.

* Dave Tippett, the winningest coach in Coyotes history, earned his 200th victory behind the Arizona bench (200-135-58).

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS OUT

Several goaltenders posted strong outings to lead their clubs to wins:

* Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots for his seventh win of the season (7-2-4) and Johan Franzen broke a 1-1 deadlock with his third game-winning goal of 2014-15 in the Detroit Red Wings' win against the Chicago Blackhawks. Howard picked up his first win against Chicago since Jan. 14, 2012, snapping a personal seven-game skid against the Blackhawks (0-3-4). The game marked Detroit’s first regulation win against the Blackhawks at Joe Louis Arena since Oct. 8, 2009, when Franzen also scored the decisive tally (2-5-4 since). Overall the Red Wings are 2-4-4 in the past 10 meetings between the Original Six rivals (2-4-4).

* Cory Schneider stopped 30 shots for his first shutout of the season and 13th of his career, and Mike Cammalleri scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season, helping the New Jersey Devils snap a four-game road losing streak by blanking the Washington Capitals. Schneider started his 17th consecutive game, a career high, to tie Martin Brodeur for the second-longest streak to start a season in franchise history; Brodeur holds the record of 19 straight starts from Oct. 6 to Nov. 2, 2001 (via Elias).

* Thomas Greiss made 30 saves and Pascal Dupuis scored twice to lift the Penguins over the Maple Leafs. Greiss (2-0-1) has yet to lose a game in regulation this season; he has a 1.96 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. Dupuis’ game-winning goal was his first since March 14, 2013, also at Toronto.

CROSBY, VORACEK BATTLE FOR POINTS LEAD

* Sidney Crosby had his League-leading 18th assist and 25th point of the season in the win at Toronto. He has at least one point in 11 of Pittsburgh’s first 15 games and has 21 points (10-11—21) in 14 career visits to Air Canada Centre.

* Jakub Voracek of the Flyers stretched his point streak to nine games, matching his career-high set from Dec. 9- 28, 2013 (6-9—15). He has 5-12—17 during his current stretch, including seven multiple-point games. Overall, Voracek has a point in 14 of 15 games this season – the lone exception a 4-0 road loss to the Blackhawks – and ranks second in the League in assists (17) and points (24), behind only Crosby in each category.

FRIDAY NOTABLES

* Aaron Ekblad scored the tying goal with 2:35 left in regulation to force overtime and stretch his point streak to three games (1-4—5). The first player taken in the 2014 NHL Draft is tied for the team lead and is tops among all rookie defensemen with nine points.

* Devils forward Mike Cammalleri scored his third game-winning goal of the season and second in as many games to stretch his point streak to three games (2-2—4). He set a career-high with eight game-winning goals for the Calgary Flames last season.

* Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo surpassed John Vanbiesbrouck for fifth on the all-time saves list with his 19th stop against the Islanders; he finished with 31). Luongo has 22,214 saves in 815 games (27.3 per game).

LOOSE PUCKS

Panthers forwards Jimmy Hayes and Vincent Trocheck each posted multiple points to stretch their point streaks to three games (3-2—5 and 0-4—4, respectively). Jussi Jokinen added two assists and leads the club with eight. . . .Flyers forward Brayden Schenn had an assist to push his point streak to four games (1-4—5). … Mikkel Boedker of the Coyotes had an assist to stretch his point streak to three games (1-2—3) . . . The Flyers suffered their first regulation loss at Wells Fargo Center since their home opener on Oct. 9 (5-0-2 in that span). Philadelphia captain Claude Giroux had his seventh multi-point performance of the season; he is 3-4—7 during a four-game point streak. … Florida’s Jonathan Huberdeau improved to 8-for-18 (44.4%) in his career by scoring in the shootout. … By playing in his 303rd consecutive game, Penguins forward Craig Adams surpassed Jordan Staal for the second-longest consecutive games played streak in franchise history. … Arizona’s B.J. Crombeen played in his 400th NHL game. … Penguins defenseman Simon Despres played in his 100th NHL game. … Sam Gagner of the Coyotes had two assists to eclipse 300 NHL points. … The Panthers hosted their Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night.
