CAPITALS RALLY TO WIN WINTER CLASSIC PREVIEW

Trailing 2-0 a minute into the second period, the Washington Capitals scored three unanswered goals late in the period and hung on to beat the Chicago Blackhawks in their only meeting before a New Year’s Day showdown at Nationals Park in Washington in the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

* Braden Holtby made a season-high 38 saves to help the Capitals earn their first win since Oct. 26, snapping a 0-4-1 skid. It was Washington's first regulation win at United Center since Feb. 15, 2004.

* The Capitals scored three times in the final 4:57 of the second period, two of them in 42 seconds during the final minute by Marcus Johansson (1-1—2) and Joel Ward. Johansson stretched his point streak to four games (3-3—6) and Ward scored for the third consecutive game. He leads the Capitals with two game-winning goals.

* Andre Burakovsky (1-1—2) had Washington's first goal and added an assist to move into second in rookie scoring with 10 points (3-7—10).

* In celebration of their New Year's Day game, the Capitals and Blackhawks wore Winter Classic toques during their pregame warmup.

LINDHOLM LIFTS 'CANES IN OT FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

The Carolina Hurricanes trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes but, Victor Rask (1-1—2) scored to force overtime and assisted on Elias Lindholm’s OT game-winner as the Hurricanes won their fourth consecutive game and completed a home-and-home sweep of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

* Lindholm has the game-winner in three of the four victories during the Hurricanes’ streak. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Lindholm is the third Hurricanes player in the past eight seasons to score three game-winning goals in a four-game stretch, following Jeff Skinner (three from Jan. 2-9, 2014) and Erik Cole (three from March 5-12, 2008).

* Lindholm extended his career-best point streak to four games (4-2—6). His three decisive goals are a career high (previously two in 2013-14).

* Cam Ward (29 saves) has been the goalie of record in each of the four games on Carolina’s streak; he has a 1.50 goals-against average, a .944 save percentage and one shutout in that span. Ward has put together four straight wins for the first time since winning four in a row from Jan. 24-30, 2010.

COYOTES RALLY FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

Trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes, Rob Klinkhammer and Shane Doan tied the game with goals 58 seconds apart in the second period and Mikkel Boedker scored the game-deciding goal in the shootout to lift the Arizona Coyotes over the Anaheim Ducks.

* The Coyotes have won three straight games for the first time this season and defeated the Ducks for the first time since April 27, 2013, snapping a five-game skid (0-3-2).

* Boedker improved to 12-for-36 (33.3%) in career shootout attempts. He has five game-deciding goals.

* Antoine Vermette (2-3—5) and Martin Hanzal (0-3—3) each extended their point streaks to three games.

OILERS EARN FIRST ROAD WIN

After falling behind in the third period, Mark Arcobello scored the tying goal and Boyd Gordon had the game-winner to lift the Edmonton Oilers to their first road victory in six games this season (1-4-1). Viktor Fasth made 29 saves for his first win of 2014-15 (1-2-1).

* Edmonton has won its past two visits to Buffalo. Those are the Oilers' only victories in their past nine games against the Sabres dating to Jan. 16, 2006 (2-6-1).

* The Oilers finished with a season-high 52 shots, four shy of the franchise record for shots in regulation set in a 6-4 win over Colorado on Feb. 16, 2013 (per Elias).

* Iiro Pakarinen scored his first NHL goal in his second career game; he debuted Thursday in a road game against the Boston Bruins. Pakarinen was selected by the Panthers in the seventh round (No. 184) of the 2011 NHL Draft but has since played in Finland’s Liiga. He signed an entry-level contract with the Oilers in June after helping his country win a bronze medal at the 2014 World Hockey Championship.

RED WINGS CONTINUE HOME-ICE DOMINANCE OF DEVILS

The Detroit Red Wings overcame a 1-0 deficit by scoring four straight goals, including Johan Franzen’s eventual game-winner, and beat the New Jersey Devils. Detroit is 11-1-0 against New Jersey in their past 12 games at Joe Louis Arena dating to a 5-4 win on Dec. 19, 1997.

* Franzen scored his second game-winning goal of the season; he has 6-5—11 in nine career games against the Devils.

* Niklas Kronwall (1-1—2) had his 304th and 305th career points, giving him sole possession of fourth place on the franchise’s all-time scoring list among defensemen, surpassing Gary Bergman (303).

* Jakub Kindl scored in consecutive games for the first time in his career. Fellow defenseman Brendan Smith found the back of the net for the first time this season; three of his seven career goals are against the Devils (he also scored against New Jersey on March 4 and March 7, 2014 last season).

HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER AWARENESS NIGHTS

The Sabres and Hurricanes wore special jerseys during their respective Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Nights. In Buffalo, longtime Sabres play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret and Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Jim Kelly dropped the ceremonial puck. (WATCH )

Devils forward Jaromir Jagr played in his 1,487th NHL game, tying Wayne Gretzky for 17th in NHL history. . . . Ryan Getzlaf scored Anaheim’s opening goal to bring his career total vs. Arizona to 16-38—54 in 52 games. Teammate Jakob Silfverberg improved to 7-for-12 (58.3%) in career shootout attempts. . . . Blue Jackets forwards Scott Hartnell (2-0—2) and Boone Jenner (0-2—2) each had multiple-point games. . . . Sabres goaltender Michal Neuvirth made 49 saves, two shy of his career high; he stopped 51 shots at Carolina on March 13. . . . Blackhawks netminder Corey Crawford had his shutout streak snapped at 153:30. Teammate Duncan Keith scored in his 700th NHL game. . . . Capitals forward Jay Beagle played in his 200th NHL game. . . . Jordin Tootoo scored his first goal/point in a Devils uniform against his former team. . . . Boston University freshman Jack Eichel, one of the top prospects for the 2015 NHL Draft, scored in his team’s 5-3 win over Boston College in a game broadcast nationally in the U.S. on NBCSN. . . . The Red Wings wore special camouflage jerseys in their pregame warmup as part of their Military Appreciation Night.
