ABDELKADER RALLIES RED WINGS AGAIN

Down 2-1 after 40 minutes, the Detroit Red Wings scored three times in the third period, including two goals by Justin Abdelkader (WATCH ), to win 4-2 against the Washington Capitals. Detroit's victory was its first in Washington since Dec. 9, 2005, snapping a four-game skid (0-3-1).

* Abdelkader's second tally stood as his second winning goal of the season. He also scored the decisive marker on Oct. 23 vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins when the Red Wings overcame a two-goal deficit in the final three minutes of regulation before winning in overtime. Detroit also trailed entering the final period in that game; in fact, the Red Wings hold a 2-0-1 record when trailing after 40 minutes this season (also 3-2 SO loss vs. the Boston Bruins on Oct. 15).

* Abdelkader (2-1-3) recorded at least three points for the second time in his career; he tallied a career-high 3-1-4 vs. the Anaheim Ducks on Mar. 22, 2013.

* Gustav Nyquist scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the second period (tied with Abdelkader) and now has 5-2-7 in four career games against the Capitals.

* Pavel Datsyuk scored a power-play goal in the final minute of the third period (WATCH ) and recorded the primary assist on the winning goal. He has at least a point in each of his four games this season (2-3-5) and 5-7-12 in seven career visits to the Verizon Center.

* Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 27 shots to improve to 4-1-2 this season with a .928 save percentage and 1.96 goals-against average.

RINNE, SMITH LEAD PREDATORS IN OIL COUNTRY

Pekka Rinne stopped 26 shots and the Nashville Predators scored twice in a span of 86 seconds in the second period (WATCH ) in a 4-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place. With the victory, Nashville improved to 6-1-2 (14 points) this season and halted Edmonton's winning streak at four games.

* Rinne improved to 6-1-1 with a 1.71 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage with one shutout this season.

* Craig Smith matched a career-high with two goals, accomplished six times before (last: Apr. 13 at the Minnesota Wild).

* The Predators snapped a three-game skid against the Oilers and earned their first victory in Edmonton since Nov. 28, 2011 (2-1 win).

* Taylor Beck scored his first career game-winning goal. He now has 4-5-9 in 28 career NHL games, with his most-recent goal coming against the Dallas Stars on Apr. 12, 2013.

* Roman Josi (0-2-2) notched his first multi-point game of the season and played a game-high 25:50. Fellow blueliner Shea Weber scored his fourth goal of the season and skated 25:45.

Washington's Joel Ward extended his point streak to three games (2-1-3). … Edmonton forwards Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (3-2-5, five games) and Taylor Hall (2-1-3, three games) extended their point streaks. … Washington's Matt Niskanen (500), Detroit's Darren Helm (300), and Nashville's Paul Gaustad (600) and Colin Wilson (300) all played in milestone games. … The Department of Player Safety suspended Rangers forward John Moore for five games for an illegal check to the head of Wild forward Erik Haula during their game on Monday. … St. Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie, Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby, Minnesota left wing Zach Parise and other NHLers shared their favorite childhood Halloween costumes . . . Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby wore a special mask in honor of the team's Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night. The mask will be auctioned to raise money for the initiative
