Rangers defenseman Girardi day-to-day: report
New York Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi is day-to-day with a cut on his lower leg and questionable for the game Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center.

New York Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi is day-to-day with a cut on his lower leg and questionable for the game Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center, according to BlueshirtsUnited.com.

"The cut was bleeding this morning, so we'll see how it is [Tuesday] and go from there," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault told Jim Cerny.

Girardi left the game Sunday against the San Jose Sharks early in the third period after blocking a shot from Sharks forward Joe Pavelski that cut him near his foot and required stitches.

If Girardi can't play Tuesday, Michael Kostka will take his place in the lineup, according to Vigneault. Kostka had two costly turnovers in the Rangers' 6-3 loss to the New York Islanders on Oct. 14, his only appearance of the season.

"Players are going to make mistakes now and then, and how they respond is important," Vigneault said. "He's had some good practices. He knows the mistakes he made, and I'm sure that given the same circumstances the next time he'll make better plays. If we do need him [Tuesday] I'm sure he'll be fine."

Captain Ryan McDonagh could also see time on the right side if Girardi is ruled out. McDonagh played there while competing for the United States at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

"It's something we have discussed in the past," Vigneault said. "He looked real comfortable there [in Sochi], so if we do need him there [Tuesday] we wouldn't be afraid to use him."

Defenseman Kevin Klein practiced after receiving stitches in his chin from a shot that hit him in the final seconds Sunday.
