OTTAWA -- Colorado Avalanche goalie Reto Berra was injured in the first period against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday and Calvin Pickard came in making his NHL debut.

Colorado put No. 1 goaltender Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve earlier Thursday with a groin injury.

Berra left the game at 2:46 of the first period after he was involved in a collision with Senators center Kyle Turris, who was pushed into the net by Avalanche forward John Mitchell.

Pickard allowed four goals on 27 shots in Colorado's 5-3 loss.

Pickard was called up from the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League to replace Varlamov on the roster. The 22-year-old was selected by the Avalanche with the 49th pick in the 2010 NHL Draft. He was 1-1-0 with a .952 save percentage for Erie this season.
