Kings' Muzzin signs five-year contract extension
Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin signed a five-year contract extension Wednesday

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin signed a five-year, $20 million contract extension Wednesday.

Muzzin, 25, was in the final season of a two-year contract and could have been a restricted free agent after the season. The new contract starts next season and keeps him with the team through the 2019-2020 season.

"It's exciting," Muzzin told the Kings website. "This is a place I want to stay and I want to play here for a long time. I'm very happy that we got a deal done and this is home for me for the next five years."

An upper-body injury has kept Muzzin out of the Kings' first four games, but last season he had five goals and 24 points while averaging 19:01 of ice time in 76 regular-season games. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Muzzin's six goals in 26 games led all defensemen. He played extensively with Drew Doughty on the Kings' top defense pair.

Muzzin signed with the Kings as a free agent in January 2010, and in three seasons he has 12 goals, 41 points and a plus-22 rating in 132 regular-season games.

"Good for Jake, good for us," coach Darryl Sutter told the Kings website. "It just shows the progress that the organization and he have made in terms of developing and getting better and finding your spot and knowing you're in a good place."
