Dustin Jeffrey leads Utica Comets past Toronto Marlies 2-1

TORONTO - Dustin Jeffrey had the eventual winner 6:27 into the second period as the Utica Comets fended off the Toronto Marlies for a 2-1 victory on Saturday in American Hockey League play.

Alexandre Grenier also scored for Utica (1-0-0), the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves for the win.

Captain Trevor Smith gave Toronto (0-1-0) a 1-0 lead 7:27 into the first. Antoine Bibeau stopped 32 shots for the Marlies, the Toronto Maple Leafs' minor league club.

Both of the Comets' goals came on the power play. Utica had seven man advantages, while Toronto was unable to score on its four power plays.

It was an undisciplined game with the Comets earning 26 penalty minutes and the Marlies racking up 41 minutes in the penalty box.
