Preseason Roundup: Blackhawks rout Oilers

The Chicago Blackhawks put on a show in Saskatoon on Sunday.

The Blackhawks got goals from five players and a 22-save shutout by goaltender Scott Darling in a 5-0 victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Credit Union Centre.

Bryan Bickell scored 5:54 into the game to put Chicago ahead to stay. Garret Ross and Teuvo Teravainen scored 54 seconds apart in the second period, and goals by Andrew Shaw and Kris Versteeg in the third period completed the rout.

Edmonton also lost its captain, defenseman Andrew Ference, with a right arm injury and did not return. Oilers coach Dallas Eakins said after the game that Ference's X-ray was negative and "he'll be fine."

Capitals 2, Canadiens 0: | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | The Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens played more than 58 1/2 minutes of scoreless hockey before Joel Ward's goal put the Capitals ahead.

Ward banged a rebound past Carey Price with 1:29 left in regulation, and Brooks Laich hit the empty net 50 seconds later. Justin Peters stopped all seven shots he faced, and Braden Holtby made 11 saves to complete the shutout.

Each team went 0-for-6 on the power play.

Price, playing his first full game of the preseason, made 29 saves for the Canadiens, who had won their first three games.

Devils 3, Flyers 1: Scott Gomez, now 34 years old, is trying to make a return to the New Jersey Devils on a tryout contract. He didn't hurt his cause by scoring a pair of power-play goals in a victory against the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center.

Gomez, a member of the Devils' Stanley Cup-winning teams in 2000 and '03, opened the scoring with a tip-in of Marek Zidlicky's shot at 19:31 of the opening period, then made it 2-0 when he wristed a rebound past Rob Zepp at 3:02 of the second.

Rookie Taylor Leier scored a shorthanded goal for the Flyers midway through the third period, but Zidlicky's empty-netter with 44 seconds left sealed the win.

Zepp kept the Flyers in the game by making 38 saves. Scott Clemmensen stopped 15 shots for New Jersey.

Maple Leafs 3, Sabres 2 (SO): | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | Peter Holland's goal in the fifth round of the shootout capped the Toronto Maple Leafs' comeback after the Buffalo Sabres grabbed a two-goal lead.

Holland beat Andrey Makarov to put the Maple Leafs ahead, and Jonathan Bernier ended the game by denying Torrey Mitchell.

Mikhail Grigorenko put Buffalo in front by beating Bernier 25 seconds into the second period, and Nicolas Deslauriers scored at 9:24 for a two-goal lead. But Phil Kessel's goal 59 seconds later woke up the crowd at Air Canada Centre, and Kessel set up James van Riemsdyk for the game-tying power-play goal midway through the third.

Toronto, which allowed nearly 36 shots per game last season, surrendered 38 to the Sabres, the NHL's worst offensive team in 2013-15. Bernier made 36 saves, including five in overtime. Makarov stopped 27 shots.

Each team lost two players with injuries. Buffalo defenseman Patrick Kaleta was hit in the face by a shot midway through the first period and Johan Larsson ran into the elbow of Petter Granberg late in the period. Neither returned. Toronto lost forward David Booth with what coach Randy Carlyle said after the game was a bruised foot, and defenseman Cody Franson appeared to injure his left leg when Mitchell pushed him into the boards midway through the third period. Franson had to be helped off the ice, and Carlyle had no update on him.

Kings 4, Ducks 2: Jeff Carter, a key to the Los Angeles Kings' second-round victory against the Anaheim Ducks in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last spring, had a hat trick at Honda Center, giving them back-to-back wins against their Southern California rival.

Defenseman Robyn Regehr opened the scoring for the Kings 2:47 into the game, and Carter made it 2-0 at 11:25. Anaheim's Sami Vatanen halved the deficit 21 seconds later, and Emerson Etem tied the score at 17:17 of the second period.

But Carter fired home a loose puck 1:14 later to put the Kings on top to stay, then completed his hat trick 3:52 into the third period after a turnover by Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler.

Anaheim, which is 0-3-1 in its past four games, was 0-for-6 on the power play and is 0-for-15 during the preseason.

Flames 2, Avalanche 1: Rookie Michael Ferland had both goals for the Calgary Flames, who won in Denver to keep the Colorado Avalanche winless in five preseason games.

Ferland opened the scoring 6:57 into the game and snapped a 1-1 tie when he scored 5:00 into the second period, 69 seconds after Colorado's Ryan O'Reilly had tied the game.

Karri Ramo stopped 22 of 23 shots through two periods for the Flames, and Joni Ortio made 13 saves in the third period. Semyon Varlamov finished with 22 saves for Colorado, which is 0-4-1 in the preseason and has been outscored 17-7.
