Preseason roundup: Crosby-less Penguins win

Kasperi Kapanen and Andrew Ebbett had first-period goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins held on to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 on Saturday.

Kapanen, the Penguins' first-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, scored a power-play goal 5:52 into the game by roofing a shot past Sergei Bobrovsky. Ebbett, who dressed because Sidney Crosby missed the game because of the death of his grandmother, doubled the lead at 11:44.

Crosby had been expected to make his preseason debut.

Brian Gibbons, who played for the Penguins last season before signing with the Blue Jackets as a free agent this summer, scored a power-play goal early in the third period. It was the only one of Columbus' 19 shots to beat Marc-Andre Fleury.

Bobrovsky finished with 29 saves for Columbus, which had won its first four preseason games, including a 2-0 victory against the Penguins at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday.

Bruins 3, Red Wings 1: Ville Leino scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:40 left in regulation to help the Boston Bruins defeat the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

Leino, a former Red Wings forward, scored from the side of the net to break a 1-1 tie. Brad Marchand added an empty-net goal, and defenseman Dougie Hamilton had a second-period goal and an assist on Leino's game-winner.

Landon Ferraro's shorthanded goal midway through the second period got the Red Wings even at 1-1.

Sharks 3, Ducks 1: Logan Couture scored his first preseason goal and rookie Barclay Goodrow had a pair of goals to lead the San Jose Sharks past the Anaheim Ducks at SAP Center.

Goodrow, who signed with the Sharks as an unrestricted free agent, has scored three times in two games.

Couture opened the scoring at 11:26 of the first period by converting Jason Demers' pass for a power-play goal. Goodrow scored 2:01 later and connected for the Sharks' second power-play goal at 5:29 of the second period.

Matt Beleskey's third-period goal spoiled the shutout bid of Alex Stalock, who made 16 saves. John Gibson stopped 30 shots for the Ducks, whose parade to the penalty box gave San Jose 10 power-play opportunities.

Stars 4, Blues 2: Paul Stastny, the St. Louis Blues' big free-agent signing, scored his first goal as a member of the Blues, but the Dallas Stars got goals from four players to win a game played at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

Travis Morin's goal 3:56 into the second period broke a 1-1 tie, and Darren Meech's power-play goal at 12:13 proved to be the game-winner. Stastny scored at 13:42 of the middle period to cut the deficit to one goal, but Kevin Connauton gave the Stars some insurance with a goal early in the third period.

Robby Fabbri opened the scoring for the Blues 3:50 into the game, but Dallas' Branden Troock tied it 55 seconds layer

Dallas is 3-1-0 in the preseason; St. Louis fell to 0-3-1.

Wild 4, Jets 3: | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | Defenseman Jared Spurgeon scored the Minnesota Wild's third power-play goal of the game, firing home a wrist shot with 4:51 left in regulation to give the Wild a win against the Winnipeg Jets at home.

Spurgeon jumped in from the point, took a feed from Michael Keranen and wristed a shot past goaltender Ondrej Pavelec to break a 3-3 tie.

The Wild also got power-play goals by Mikael Granlund and Nino Niederreiter, as well as a penalty-shot goal by Erik Haula late in the first period. Minnesota went 3-for-4 with the extra man and killed off all three Winnipeg power plays.

Nicolas Petan, Matt Halischuk and Grant Clitsome scored for the Jets, who managed 17 shots against Niklas Backstrom. Pavelec made 20 saves.

Predators 2, Panthers 1 (SO): Craig Smith had the Nashville Predators' lone goal in regulation and ended the game by scoring in the second round of the shootout to give the Predators a victory in the first of two split-squad games against the Florida Panthers at Bridgestone Arena.

Smith put the Predators ahead when he beat Al Montoya 4:11 into the game. Brandon Pirri's power-play goal with 7:08 left in regulation got the Panthers even.

Derek Roy and Smith scored in the shootout; Nashville goaltender Carter Hutton stopped both Florida shooters, Vincent Trocheck and Brad Boyes.

Predators 4, Panthers 1: Swedish rookie Pontus Aberg scored twice to help the Predators complete a sweep of the Panthers at Bridgestone Arena.

Aberg, Nashville's second-round pick (No. 37) in the 2012 NHL Draft, opened the scoring at 17:26 of the first period, then gave Nashville a 3-1 lead when he scored an unassisted goal against Roberto Luongo 6:22 into the third period. Kevin Fiala, Nashville's first pick (No. 11) in the 2014 draft, broke a 1-1 tie at 14:41 of the second period, and Austin Watson hit the empty net with 1:33 remaining

Alex Petrovic's point shot at 9:46 of the second period was the only one to beat Pekka Rinne, who made 22 saves. Luongo, playing for the first time in the preseason, stopped 16 of 18 shots in two periods; Dan Ellis made five saves in the third.
