GREENBURGH, N.Y. - New York Rangers centre Derek Stepan has broken his lower left leg during a conditioning drill.
The Rangers say it's unclear how long Stepan will be sidelined. The 24-year-old Stepan missed a scrimmage on Sunday and preseason game on Monday with a leg injury.
After several X-rays, he was cleared to take part in fitness testing on Wednesday.
Rangers coach Alain Vigneault (vihn-YOH') says Stepan got hurt despite three X-rays and "feeling really good the last 48 hours."
Vigneault says after the final X-ray, "everything looked normal and good to go. Then he stepped on the ice and unfortunately got hurt."
The Rangers season opener is Oct. 9.
