Devils' Clowe hoping to be cleared for start of camp

New Jersey Devils forward Ryane Clowe has been on the ice with teammates for informal workouts, but isn't sure he'll be with the team when training camp opens Sept. 19.

Clowe hasn't played since March 31, when he sustained a concussion during a game against the Florida Panthers. He told NorthJersey.com that he will see a concussion specialist prior to taking his training camp physical and is hoping for a clean bill of health from both exams.

"I feel pretty good," Clowe said Thursday. "I'm not going to say if I'm ready to go or not because I've got to get cleared to play and I've got to see the doctor again before the season starts. But I feel good. I, obviously, haven't done any contact. I've been skating the last few weeks, just scrimmaging since I got back with the guys. I've been on the ice and stuff.

"The biggest thing with me is, when we start practicing, if I get some contact in then and just go from there. I've been feeling pretty good. I've been working out pretty normal the last, I guess, month."

The concussion that ended Clowe's season was his second of 2013-14; he had missed more than two months after being elbowed in the head Oct. 13 by the Winnipeg Jets' Jacob Trouba.

Clowe said during the summer he saw a neurologist and a different specialist for treatment of neck issues, telling Northjersey.com, "It all kind of goes together."

Devils coach Peter DeBoer said he is "very optimistic" Clowe will be ready to go when training camp starts.

"I have seen Ryane," DeBoer told NorthJersey.com. "I had a couple of good conversations with him and he looks really good."
