Veteran defenseman Mottau decides to retire
Veteran NHL defenseman Mike Mottau has decided to retire, he told CSN New England's Joe Haggerty on Tuesday.

Veteran NHL defenseman Mike Mottau has decided to retire, he told CSN New England's Joe Haggerty on Tuesday.

"It was time," Mottau said. "I'm happy with my decision, and it's on to the next thing."

A seventh-round pick (No. 182) of the New York Rangers, Mottau spent the bulk of his career with the New Jersey Devils, playing in 235 of his 321 games over his three seasons there.

Mottau also played for the Rangers, Calgary Flames, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers, where he ended his career with eight games last season. He finishes with seven goals, 58 points and 164 penalty minutes.

Mottau was born in Quincy, Mass., and played at Boston College, winning the Hobey Baker in 2000.
