Predators hope Ellis contract done before camp
Ryan Ellis, who was third among the Nashville Predators defensemen last season with 27 points, is the lone restricted free agent from last season's roster still unsigned.

In what has been a busy offseason for the Nashville Predators, one more important goal has to be reached.

Ryan Ellis, who was third among the team's defensemen last season with 27 points, is the lone restricted free agent from last season's roster still unsigned.

"Like 99 percent of negotiations that aren't done at this time, we just don't agree exactly on what the dollars should be," Predators general manager David Poile told Josh Cooper of The Tennessean. "Hopefully it will be done by training camp. That's what our target is."

According to the newspaper, veterans are scheduled to report for training camp Sept. 17.

Ellis, the 11th pick of the 2009 NHL Draft, is coming out of his three-year, entry-level contract. He set career-bests last season games played (80), goals (six), assists (21) and points, and was a plus-9 while playing an average of 16:04 per game.

With new coach Peter Laviolette installing an up-tempo offense, Ellis' talents with the puck are expected to be a great fit.

"We think what we saw in the last year in terms of his contributions to our club and with a change to the new coach, can be an exciting time and a good opportunity for Ryan," Poile said.
