Derick Brassard and the New York Rangers appear to be a perfect match, and neither side wanted the relationship to break up. That's why they avoided arbitration and agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract on July 27.
"Since I got here to New York I've been saying how much I really enjoy playing for the Rangers, and I don't see myself playing for any other team," Brassard told BlueshirtsUnited.com. "So I was hoping I'd be staying here for a long time, and I got my wish. I was confident both sides would find a way to get it done, but I'll admit I was both patient and anxious for a deal to get done."
Brassard, who turns 27 on Sept. 22, scored a career-high 18 goals last season and had 45 points. He had six goals and six assists in 23 postseason games, helping the Rangers reach the Stanley Cup Final.
The Rangers will count on Brassard to provide more offense this season, especially after the remaining years on Brad Richards' contract were bought out. Brassard, who was acquired by New York from the Columbus Blue Jackets on April 3, 2013, is excited to take on the added responsibility.
"I try and improve every year as a player, but I am going to go about preparing myself the same way and I am going to be the same player, just try and be even better," he said. "I think last season will help me and the whole team, because now we all know what it takes to really compete for the Stanley Cup. I want to mature as a player in all areas, and I want to take another big step."
