Red Wings' Abdelkader suspended 3 games by IIHF
Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader was suspended for the first three games of the 2015 World Championship by the IIHF on Tuesday.

The International Ice Hockey Federation on Tuesday suspended Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader for the first three games of the 2015 World Championship as the result of an illegal check to the head during a 2014 World Championship game.

Abdelkader was playing for the United States when he committed the infraction against Czech Republic forward Vladimir Sobotka at 6:41 of the second period in a May 22 quarterfinal.

Abdelkader received a major penalty for charging and a game misconduct. Sobotka left the game and did not return, but played in the next two games for the Czech Republic.

The IIHF also suspended forward Nik Antropov of Kazakhstan for three games of the 2015 Worlds as the result of an illegal check to the head of Switzerland forward Kevin Romy in a May 17 game.

Antropov, a 13-season NHL veteran who played last season for Astana Barys of the Kontinental Hockey League, received a match penalty and missed Kazakhstan's final game of the tournament. Romy sustained a concussion and missed the remainder of the tournament. Antropov has two games remaining on his suspension.
