Ferraro signs one-year contract with Red Wings
Forward Landon Ferraro signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, the team announced Friday. Financial terms were not released.

Forward Landon Ferraro signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, the team announced Friday. Financial terms were not released, but Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reported it is a two-way contract.

Ferraro, a 2009 second-round pick (No. 32) of the Red Wings made his NHL debut last season. He had two shots on goal and two penalty minutes averaging 8:58 of ice time in four regular-season games. Ferraro scored 15 goals and had 31 points in 70 games with the Grand Rapid Griffins of the American Hockey League.

“I think, by everybody’s account, Landon’s included, I think last year was a disappointing season for him," Red Wings assistant general manager Ryan Martin told the Free Press. "The positive was that he got a chance to come up to the NHL and play some games. But down in Grand Rapids, he was not happy with his year down there."

Last season was his third in the AHL, and in 200 games he has 48 goals and 98 points. He was part of the Grand Rapids' team that won the Calder Cup in 2012.

"Certainly a penalty-kill player, that's one of his specialties," Martin told the newspaper. "His speed is an asset, and he's more than capable with the puck and has good hockey sense. You don't get 24 goals in your second year in the American League without knowing how to play offensively."

Ferraro is the son of former NHL player and current TSN broadcaster Ray Ferraro.
