Goaltender Joni Ortio has signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Flames, the team announced Thursday.
Ortio played 10 games with the Flames last season, making his NHL debut Feb. 27. He was 4-5-0 with a 2.84 goals-against average.
Playing for Abbottsford on the American Hockey League, Ortio, 23, was 27-8-0 and finished near the top of the league in save percentage (.926; second), wins (27; fourth) and GAA (2.33; sixth).
“[Progress] is always different for goaltenders,” general manager Brad Treliving told the Calgary Herald. “He excelled at the American League level, played well in his stint here. So he was obviously a player we wanted to make sure we locked up. We think there’s a lot of upside with Joni.”
He was selected by the Flames in the sixth round (No. 171) of the 2009 NHL Draft.
