Canadiens sign first-round pick Nikita Scherbak to entry-level contract

MONTREAL - The Montreal have signed 2014 first round pick Nikita Scherbak to a three-year entry-level contract.

The six-foot-two, 189-pound forward had 78 points (28 goals, 50 assists) in 65 regular-season games with the Western Hockey League's Saskatoon Blades last season.

He also led all WHL rookies in scoring and was the WHL Eastern Conference finalist for the Rookie of the Year award.

Scherbak led the Blades in goals, assists, points and power-play goals (eight).

The 18-year-old Moscow native was selected 26th overall by Montreal in the 2014 draft.

Quote of the Day

For our team, as a group, we've never been this far before, and so it's just more lessons learned, and sometimes you have to go to the school of hard knocks to find out what works and what doesn't. We've got a young group. They've played some unreal hockey here to get us this far, and we showed if we're not going to play the proper way, a really, really good hockey team is going to beat you, and that's what they did. It's a lesson learned.
